Anyone know anything about SEO

Want to get my website ( Loans & Financing « Got Finance? ) up the list,

Does anyone know who can help or what is involved? (cam i am looking at you!)

Or does anyone know how to add tags to my site? yes i am a dummy about this stuff but i want results and also want to learn along the way

I used to work for a company who specialise in exactly this.

My advice - dont pay any of these companies to do it for you.

Start by getting the head metatags sorted. Namely the description and keywords.
Then you can submit to direct to most major search engines for inclusion.
I haven't done it for a while, but I'll see if i can dig up some links.

No. Limit it to 1000 characters. Otherwise it is just seen as spam.
A good mix of some general terms, plus quite specific targeted terms is good.

That is not quite all.
SEO is a bit more complicated than it used to be and the above is slightly outdated info. Agreed that paying stupid prices for other companies to do your SEO is a waste of money, however that is if you have the time to do it yourself.
First place to start is with Google Webmaster tools. It is free and will provide a lot of tips to get your site search engine friendly. You also need to have well written content that is relevant. No good just slapping the keywords in everywhere with hidden links.
Once you have your site sorted, then you need to build good quality back links to your site. This can take time.
With every Google update, the algorithms become more advanced and can weed out sites that "take the piss" and try to manipulate search engines. If you get it wrong, your ranking can be lowered or worse case, you can get slapped and removed from search engine ranking altogether.
It's not hard, just need to spend some time and have patience. Even with agressive SEO, the results can take a few weeks to filter through.

Google announced recently they would be "penalizing" non mobile-friendly websites too. There is a lot to SEO, your big competitors are going to have teams of people working on it around the clock, just appearing on the first page will be a decent effort and very beneficial. Speak to your web developer as they can often do some of the basic bits for you for free/minimal cost or atleast advise you on where to look.
