Hey lads/ladies, I'm after some advice on my first set of clubs.

I'm real shit at it so I don't want to go all gung ho & spend big bucks on a set. I've seen a few on the net for around the $400 mark & they look pretty good.

I was in Drummond today & the guy was telling me they measure the clubs to each players swing. Is this something I should bother with since my game sucks ass anyway?

Any experiences with buying clubs of ebay would be appreciated.

The length of the clubs will be more important than you think, if even you're crap. It can be bad for your posture and back as well if its not right.

You can purchase a set of "starter" clubs, comes with bag and buggy for around 400-500 at the Golf Box, @ Marmion St, Booragoon. Fitting is included from memory.

If you buy it on the net, it will hard to measure it up to your specs.

If golf's something you can see yourself getting into, get the best clubs you can afford. It makes a huge difference, especially if as you say, your shit.

A cheap club will have poorly weighted heads and small sweet spots. If you pay a little extra for a good quality peripheral weighted club the sweet spot is larger which means even if you don't hit it dead centre you still get a decent shot

make sure you buy oversized clubs... they're much easier to hit with when you're learning and have a larger sweet spot than standard sized clubs.

oversized refers to the size of the club head, not the length of the club.

The sets around 400-500 with everything(bag, 3 woods, irons and sometimes a free putter) are usually pretty good for starting out and you will soon decide whether you want to continue or not (more often than not you will). Don't go straight for the most expensive clubs...
Shop around and get them to do the swing tests (its free ) and they will recommend sets to you...DO NOT GET CUSTOM ONES YET, do it later when your sure you want to play...you can always sell the ones you first buy.

oversized is best for learning.

get them cut down to your size. its actually better to learn how to hit first so you know your stance etc.

But then the little white guy says I need that extra $200 for food so I can stay alive & shit.

So I get the vibe it's pretty important to get them the right size. Is there standard sizes I can try to get close to without having to custom fit? as in get the swing test, find out my rough size & then order on the net (keep coming back to the net as it seems a lot cheaper)

I suggest you try all kinds of clubs.
Try the heavy, light, long, short, and etc.

Take it for a few shots.
Golf Box does have a little section where you can test them.

Take their advice.

Maybe consider buying a half set for the same amount ie. 3 5 7 9 irons. Steer clear of woods if your a beginner as they are much harder to hit. Sure it's spectacular hitting it 250m away, but if it's 3 fairways over to the right......

Get your swing right first then splash out on a decent full set. Oh and save some money for a lesson or two.....Pro's can help
