Default Buying from the US

Hey guys,

Quick question for the photography gurus of PWRX.

The olds were in the US recently and i asked them to look around for a decent DSLR for me while they were there, keeping the Canon 400D in mind. Dads come back with the following information:

400D doesnt exist in the US as such. He was told they call it a Canon Rebel, but its basically the US equivilant of our 400D and could get one for about $800USD with a couple of basic lenses.

So, the question i have is, given the strength of the AUS dollar at the moment compared to the USD, would it be worth buying one from over there and getting it sent over? (as the cheapest ive found for an equivilant 400D package here is about $1400) And if so, are there likely to be any problems with compatability with things like hooking it up to my computer, or power/battery issues etc?

Here is the product description of the Rebel. Does it seem pretty similar to a 400D?

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...ModelDetailAct

All opinions appreciated.

Cheers,
Blair.

You wont have issues with power, etc.

I believe they are the same as the 400D - Consider the 400D/Rebel share the same instruction manual.

Also, you are under $1000 so no taxes charged on imports - Shouldn't be an issue as it should be covered under our FTA I believe.

Ok cool.

The package more specifically is the Canon Rebel XTi with Canon 18-55mm & 75-300mm III lenses for $899 USD.

Does that sound like a decent price against something similar here?

Somebody could answer the questions better than I could - But considering I paid $1300 for the 400D with only the 18-55mm lens - Sounds like a descent deal.

If you are planning to get into it properly, why not consider going for a single lens/body only and invest in quality lenses? Although prepare to start paying $1k plus per lens.

Yeah its a thought, but i dont really understand enough about the different lenses yet to know what i need. So figured i would just get one, play around with it for awhile and read up on things until i know what im talking about, then take it seriously. Its still all a bit foreign to me at the moment.

Ok so from what ive read in this short time on a couple of different forums, the 75-300mm lense is not worth having.

Can anyone suggest some lenses that might be worth having for general photography (cars etc.)?

Alternatively, can anyone point me in the direction of somewhere that explains what the different lense measurements mean and their applications?

Mate I wouldnt be too sure about buying in the US unless your happy not having a proper warranty? im fairly certain if you buy there you will only have warranty in America so if somthing breaks it has to be sent over there, also with lenses even The L series lenses the focus can be out slightly which means it has to be sent back to canon. my 350d front focused and my 50 1.8mm front focuses also, my L's are fine though.

Ah, warranty was something i didnt consider. Will have to check up on that. I can buy all the lenses here though and just buy the body from the US..
