I was dissapointed with my last purchase from Stu, Cash didnt talk ordered 5d with grip and he didnt budge and I had cash, and I even went to the bank and put it in his account cos missed him delivering it! LOL will be buying elsewhere now. Then when somone told him about the 5d price being cheaper elsewhere the price on his site went down next day Ill be buying from PRAimaging from now on.

back to the topic, 400d perfect to start off with, that's what i have but if i only had more $ i'd go 5d. Concider getting better than stock lenses, to get the best out of your photos glass is all that matters. I'd prefer a L lens + 400d than a stock lens and 40d any day

I would spend the money on the 400D body only and then get a better lens than the kit. The 17-85 IS is a good start (part of enthusiest kit). If you can then afford a 70-200 f4 for motorsport you will be pretty set.
If you have more $$$ to burn look at 17-40mm L, 70-200 f4 L with a 50mm prime. This seems to be a fairly common combo with good reason. Like with anything you can get better again, depends on how serious you want to get and how big your pockets are. The 400D body though small in size can definitely get the shots in stunning quality when given a good lens. Maybe treat your self to a 450D when they are in stock. The 40D is worth the extra money as it is brilliant although maybe more than you need. The 40D is more for people shooting 10,000+ shots a year in my opinion. I have 30D, 17-40mm L, 60mm f2.8 macro, 70-200 f4L as my main shooters.

The Nikon/Canon thing seems to be like Holden/Ford. I am Ford, after Subaru of course
The 450D...hmm I guess you pay to be an early adopter, I am yet to find a price on this puppy. Sounds way more expensive, Lighter, bigger display, larger 12mb... Great info folks, thanks again!

I dont think the 450D will be more expensive by much at all. When the 40D replaced the 30D it was actually cheaper than the old body.
I am inclined to think that the 400D will be made cheaper to compete with the Nikon d40x price range and the 450D will be the same price as the 400D was. According to the press release the expected retail is US $799 for the body, $899 with the 18-55mm IS (new kit lens). http://www.usa.canon.com/templatedat...80123_xsi.html Competition is good

I went to Praimage yesterday and spoke to the dudes there. They were really helpful and priced me at $1149 for the twin lens kit. Given my application this combo is hard to beat. I am thinking with the local warranty and a bit of effort they may throw in a bag or maybe a $49 2Gb memory card? Bastards even let me play with a 5D just to tease me...
The feedback they included on the new 450D was interesting. They advised the new 450D has another type of memory that is not as reliable as the 400D. Now I never trust any sales spiel (Sorry Prototype and others ) so I will cross check before I hand over any readies. Sounds correct from my initial impression considering I am an Electronics Technician by trade. Regardless the 400D is a great combo with the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 II lens + EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 telephoto zoom lens. Wow, you can spend some serious coin on lenses alone!

SD cards are plenty reliable, Canons top cameras (1Ds III - $12999.00 etc) use SD + CF cards.
I think the salesman wants to have your money now. To be honest I think the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 will be too slow for you as far as focus is concerned. They make a USM version but even that has micro USM not proper ring type USM. I had this lens and then off loaded it for this reason. Its also soft until you stop it down to f7.1 - f8. Just a heads up. You would be better to save your money a bit longer and buy a 70-300 IS USM. Plenty of good quality second hand ones around too. Decent lenses last for decades. *USM = ultra sonic motor

Thanks again Guys, collected the 400D and twin lens kit yesterday with a 4Gb card as well.
There will always be a better deal out there but I have something today, that like my TD04, is more than enough OK, as I also have a GTPS01 and a VF22 on the shelf I can appreciate that having a clear upgrade path is important. My new lenses are nothing special but compared to my crappy camera phone I am now in a much better place photographically speaking. Thanks again for the feedback
