I've just bought a Nikon D40 as my first DSLR.
Still trying to work it all out, but so far it's been fantastic for an entry level DSLR. I took it up to Wannaroo yesterday, an took some great shots. With the right contacts or during a sale, you can pick them up for just over $600. have a read of this: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ND40/ND40A.HTM |

I prefer the Canon stuff because lots of my friends have canon and I can borrow their lenses while I save up for my own :P
Maniac's is a good buy as you get aftermarket lenses too, which make a world of difference in quality of photos

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I am in the market to purchase an entry level DSLR as well now.
Since its been a few months since this thread have things changed and what camera is a good entry level? I have seen a few different brands all around the same price: Olympus E-510, Canon, Nikon etc. Cheers jase

Canon or Nikon either way cant go wrong, your gonna get the fanboys from each side telling you to buy what they use.

One of the majors with a lens kit is a good way to go... don't fall for buying the out going models for cheaper, the tech is moving in leaps and bounds and the replacement budget models are often better than the pro version of the last :P Canon, Nikon or Pentax all have good kits out.

I got my mum to pick me up a 450d a few months back from hong kong and its a great camera IMO, easy to use and is a nice well built but still cheap camera..
body + 18-55 + 75-300 + 2 Hoya UV filters + 4gb Apacer card for just under $1k IIRC.. I also love the Nikons and dont think you'd go wrong with any of them nowadays
