I'd say mix and match to suit your budget. I use a Canon 580EX and couple of Nikon SB28s fired using triggers.
I dont think the Vivitars are manufactured anymore but Gadget Infinity/Cactus do a version (KF36) which is nice and cheap. But certainly no dramas IMO in mixing various brands of flashes if you are using them as off-camera lights. I dont know exactly how adjustable the Vivitar flashes are. I read that the Cactus one only has 1/2, 1/4 and 1/16 power settings...but without having seen one personally I cant confirm.
