FYI. The rig is attached to the car, camera on the rig, car pushed about 3m at walking pace. (Not actually driving)

Ryan that pic came out great! Hows the jig? Work well?

Thanks again dudes, hopefully will be doing more of these in the near future as I've got heaps of ideas to test out!

It's perfect Russ, the joiners are fantastic, really sturdy and no wiggle in them at all, thanks heaps for all your efforts. There is noticeable sag in the tubes at 4.5m length with the camera mounted, but it's pretty managable and as you said, at walking pace it doesnt affect the image quality at all. I've got a wire support brace that is nearly done which I will use next time and hopefully I'll be able to go the full 6.5m!

Edit: Just noticed that at that angle my scoop looks friggin huge! Pedestrians beware, you'll be swallowed up!

Why so far away? I haven't looked into rigs so 4.5-6m might be the going length and would obviously depend upon what focal length you're shooting at.

Flexibility. On some cars you can only mount the rig on the roof (and visa versa), whereas sometimes the bonnet can be used, so obviously if you're shooting from the roof you need an extra metre or two to get the same kind of shot.

It depends entirely on what look I'm going for. Also, some locations (such as wide open countryside) you'd want the car to take up a little less of the frame and let the scenery make the image. Other cases (such as underground carparks with lots of lights) you tend to want the car to almost fill the frame.

At the moment I'm shooting on a crop body with an 11-16mm so I need all the length I can get, when I step up to full frame I will be able to get away with a shorter rig. With new house settling next week though, a FF body is a long way away

Hey Jan, Do you normally use a mono/tripod or hand held for your panning shots?

Always handheld, don't own a monopod and only use my tripod for static shots. Above shot was with 5D2 and 70-200.
