Opensource Tuners in Perth Wanted!!
Hi all,
I was wondering if there are any opensource tuners in perth? There are quite a few in the US but cant find anything here. Some legal issue? I am just after someone who can tune my WRX using the stock ECU and a tactrix cable. Phoning around tuning places in perth left me with a $1500 quote for a cheap tune. I cant afford this much, so i have to find a cheaper option. I wanted to buy a XPT map and then make the needed changes for my mods. I would like to do it myself but i am still a tuning noob Main problem is i have a 9:1 compression ratio engine, not the WRX 8:1. So is there anyone out there who would like to help me tune my map? I can come to you and bring cash and beer!! |

To do a proper tune, you'll need your car on a dyno
The tuning places that quoted you that would include use of dyno There's no such thing as a cheap tune. It may be cheap up front, but if its not done correctly, it will cost more in the long run |

Your first custom tune will take a few hours anyway. And at $200-250 per hour on a dyno, you may as well pay the little bit extra to get a Verso tune and gain the experience and knowledge that Sean has with tuning Subarus with Verso.
Its just not worth risking your engine with some noob with a Laptop and open source reflash software

Perth is quite short of knowledgeable 'tech' people who can write the definition files and understand all the complexities of EcuFlash. Stick with those who have a track record, as you are paying a few extra bucks for their knowledge. Any idiot can create a map that makes bulk power... For 30 seconds. Alternative options are ECUTek, which is done by MMS and RT. However this costs slightly more and is not open source.

Hmm, i dont know.. If i had a larger turbo and a intake with all the other stage2 mods i can see how paying $1000+ would be worth it. I would actually get my moneys worth, they would need to modify every table lol But if the only change from the XPT map ($100) is to lower timing and boost tables slightly why pay $1000+ for som1 to modify all the tables from scratch.
How about this... i pay the $100, reduce timing and boost and try to stop any knocking (damage to my engine). If i cant, i flash back to stock and cruise around untill i save up $1500 for a tune. If i can i cruise around on 70% potential power, save up $$$ for a larger turbo/intake then get a custom tune?? |

As everyone keeps mentioning to you... You need to monitor your air fuel ratio with a wideband sensor. You could minimise knock and still have an epic lean condition which will melt your motor.
You are running a different motor and ecu combination already which could be setting up a failure. I think you should be reassessing the car if you think $1k for tuning is expensive. Minimum cost anywhere in Australia for a simple dyno tune will be $500.
