Just a word of caution from someone whom has moved from a WRX to a RX8, and then moved on:
I agree it was one of the best looking and interesting cars I have owned but there are just so many problems associated with it:

1) very high fuel consumption - approximately 18L/100km, even worse if you drive it like its meant to be driven.
2) it deliberately burns oil. This is intentional to lubricate the rotary engine, but ends up being another added cost to keep topping it up with special rotary oil ($90 for 4L).
3) only purchase a car from 2006 onwards. The earlier ones had problems with the rotary lubrication (not enough), with many needing engine rebuilds.
4) due to the intentional burning of oil for lubrication, most have carbon build up in the rotary engine. Make sure you do a compression test before you purchase the car.
5) the car is prone to 'flooding' on cold restarts. ie make sure you drive it until the engine is warmed up before turning off the ignition. Otherwise, you risk flooding the engine, causing approximately $600 worth of damage.
6) there is NO LOW-END TORQUE. The most frustrating feature. You will know what I mean when a Ford Fiesta can take-off quicker than you at the light. And its a great disappointment after driving a WRX.
7) Boot space is small and completely impractical.
8) Servicing has to be done every 6 months, and is very expensive. I would not consider one that has not had this. Parts are also very expensive.
9) there are also many inherent faults: water flooding the tail lights, faulty coolant tank sensors ($400), faulty engine mounts ($600)
10) you should add 2-stroke oil into the fuel tank to protect the engine.

Join the forum www.rx8club.com.au and read the section "what every RX8 owner must know before buying a RX8". Essential reading.

That said though, I'm glad I did get one.... but sold it after a year! It is a true high performance car (requires a lot of maintenance) and does look great. Driving over 100km is superb, but I never tracked it so rarely had the opportunity to do so.... and it did take such a long time to get to 100km/hr!
If you can get one, the 2006 Revelation is the best model. I sold mine for $29,500 earlier this year so thats the approximate price.
Hope this helps,
Mark

have a friend who works at woodbros mazda, says that there isnt a day without an rx8 in the shop due to problems.

another friend has gone from rx8 to a golf r, says rx8 has too many problems too.

Your mrs will still want one until she gets it (when it fucks her around)

Grrrr,

I'd always wanted an RX-8 until I read this.

I was actually about to buy one when I bought the STi. Only reason I didn't was because the sales guy was a jerk and refused even the thought of a test drive. Went to subaru and they asked me to take a test drive before I'd even shown interest.

Definite trouble cars, if we ever trade them we usually wholesale them straight away. They also have corrosion issues in between the rotor housings. If you want a rear drive sports car, buy a S2000.

I have a mate who is about to trade his RX8, it's black, manual and I am unsure if it is leather or not.

Only problem is, it's in Newcastle if that bothers you.

my wife has one.

Yep, it loves to drink fuel
Yep, it needs an oil check/top up as needed every 1000km
Yep, it lacks low down torque

but she loves it.

as with any performance car, there is always a compromise (so far it has been trouble free, although the coolant sensor has started to play up), but the wife loves it. It makes a nice change from the stiff and rumbling rex when you take it for a smooth drive, Very clinical in the way it drives.

either a revelation in black or anniversary model if you can find one.

Toni
