Definitely need something from STI, but diff ratios will be an issue as stated. Even GD onwards 5 speeds are stronger.
Just got to change the transfer ratio

I think it's just easier 5 speed wrx gearbox
Anything else is too much hassle

Ironically, the box that's best suited to yours needs is one from a 2002 or newer WRX, like the car you had.

What is wrong with the current gearbox in the GC8? It may be repairable?

no. 2001 WRX still ran the 3.9 final drive ratio.

4.44 is what you want. Most durable of all the 5 speeds.

A mate of mine went through 3 stock gearbox, what a waste of money, even though it was down to his style of driving and it might not happen to you again kb but for the price of that you can have a 6 speed box!
