limitation is more like it russ, you can only flow so much air thru the stock box and that is a given, moving to the bigger turbo also requires a bigger inlet pipe as well.

Ahh ok. Was wondering how he knew that that was the restriction specifically. Cheers

Seems gay.

Sell it to me so you avoid the pain of such a slow car.

Playing the devils advocate.. (I'm not taking a jab at Sean's experience)

Maybe someone with more engineering background could do the maths on the theoretical flow of the pipe based off dimensions?

It's not just the diameter (my CAI was the same as my stock) but the bends, restrictions, resonance chambers etc that all contribute to restrictions, which you remove with a CAI.

Cool would be modelling both options in some CFD software. Then comparing to bench flow testing (maybe with some smoke to view the flow patterns).

There are a lot of myths with air boxes/cai's, with most of the gains coming from the filter, not the design of the pipe/box.

I vote someone studying engineering should do this for a final year project

Great result

However (without wanting to rain on anyones parade) I got 414nm @ 18psi on MMS Dyno and with god forbid ECUtek.

When was peak NM and HP?

My peak NM (414) is at 3000rpm
My Peak HP (260) is at 5000rpm

yes yes different dyno different day etc but ASG is normally higher than MMS being hub vs Roller

on as you know un opened EJ255

is the lack of CAI really stopping you pushing 24psi?

Interested to know your thoughts as engine build is on the cards but if the gain is not that much without having to go fully hektic race car styles then I'm not so sure anymore????

The limitations are tmic (heat soak), air, fuel injectors (stock 550's) and size of turbo
Sean played with the boost levels and got very little gain from raising boost to 22 psi so he moved it back to 20 psi. I did not bother getting a print out of the graph yesterday as it was essentially the same as the previous tune except with 7 hp more.

interesting that the peaks for both HP and NM are about 750rpm higher for what is essentially the same package

can put that down to the tuner, the abient temp, lots of variables to consider
who was the person that actually tuned your car ?
