Jezza's MY00

Since I've been on the forums a while now, I thought I'd post up my car/mods/planned mods for all to see. I picked it up fairly stock mid last year, and have started to slowly tweak things, replacing/modding as I go.

Here's a current pic of the car:

Nice looking Black GC8 and good looking Mods so far.

SPEC IV 13-04-2009 01:00 PM

Looking good Jezza ;)

blue.spec 13-04-2009 01:04 PM

put the standard rims back on or paint those black

ImPreSiV 13-04-2009 01:09 PM

yeah i agree with Kristian, paint them black!

looks good tho.. i'd get an STI lip, and an STI spoiler or 22B one, and u'd be cruising in a hot car!

Rossco 13-04-2009 01:27 PM

Good to meet you this morning bud, sorry I didn't have time to hang around and chat.

Car looks very tidy in the flesh too!

scoobygez 13-04-2009 04:49 PM

looks very nice get the rims black though :) :)

Jezza 13-04-2009 05:19 PM

yeh i was thinking black too....

like this?

scoobygez 13-04-2009 05:47 PM

thats the spirit just like that :) :)

Rexy03 13-04-2009 06:59 PM

Hmmm I prefer the gold rims .......looks hot mate..

Jezza 19-04-2009 08:04 PM

Just put on an exhaust, gotta love the rumble :)

damo 19-04-2009 08:23 PM

yeh how didi it go mate u get it on with no problems? did u put ur H brace on as well at the same time?

scoobygez 19-04-2009 08:25 PM

what exhaust did you fit??

yeah thats the main thing with a subaru the burble lol

Jezza 19-04-2009 08:29 PM

yeh exhaust went on ok, was gonna put on brace at same time, but i need the breaker bar, and darren has it. i'll probably get my brace on later this week.

SPEC IV 19-04-2009 08:31 PM

So nice midrange power now Jezza?? :D

Daren is home now... so you could always do a late nighter!!! lol

Jezza 19-04-2009 08:32 PM

haha yeh i took it easy on the test drive, but yeh more midrange and response :)

i think i've done enough diy for the weekend haha

Jezza 21-05-2009 06:24 PM

i fitted the sways today, easy job, and good results so far :)
i'm leaving the HD links off for now, i will get used to things one thing at a time...
all sways are on the softest setting - i have already felt the oversteer...

thinking of getting some fatter tyres before i adjust to harder setting, what do ya's think?

i think that 18's will be a bit too rough etc for me, i'm looking for a 17x7.5 or 17x8 for it

SPEC IV 21-05-2009 06:40 PM

Nice work Jezza.

If you want to track your car more often I would stick with 17" rims/tyre combo. If your after the more street look go 18".

Jezza 06-07-2009 05:04 PM

Update:

Have fitted the hd sway links, and adjusted rear sway bar to medium stiffness. Car is starting to lose oversteer and handling is more balanced.
Time for another AHG or track day.

Had a minor bingle down my street with a kangaroo, that left me with a dented bonnet, smashed headlight and dented fender. Sourced the panel, headlight and an aluminium bonnet from JWS, and took the car to Benson at BBK.
Got my front bumper, fenders, skirts and passenger door repainted, and I'll give Benson credit for the great job he's done, I'd highly recommend his genuine, good service and painting skills

My focus now will be transmission, tune, turbo and top-mount (not necessarily in that order :p)
My goal is a punchy, light and fun car - so obviously this next few choices/mods will have a big impact on steering my project in the right direction.

WRXRW 06-07-2009 05:51 PM

good work!

what are you thinking re each focus point? 6 speed, flash, aftermarket, vf, sti?

Evo2 06-07-2009 05:56 PM

Think i was behind u this morning on roe hway mate, that exhaust looks and sound sweet! .. I was in the wingless clubspec

Jezza 06-07-2009 06:48 PM
good work!

Still considering the options for each focus point, doing my research

At this stage i think a 5spd sti g/box should suit the power i will be making - but if the additional cost of a 6spd becomes justified, i'll definately go down that path.

In the way of a tune - i'm still very new to the subject and weighing up the differences between custom flash tune / link piggyback / motec standalone. Not sure what I need, as I want something reliable, with options for later stages of the car's development lol

Have been keen on the Process West top mount for some time now, but now with so many GD STi TMIC's available for $400 or so, I am weighing up whether the PW be worth the additional expense - but I havent found a PW vs GD TMIC comparison yet.

Turbo...The VF34 catches my eye as a popular choice for responsive power, but I am now considering a few twin-scroll setups that could offer a similar (if not better) response/top end to the VF34

What do you think?
Anyone else with opinions feel free to share :D
Think i was behind u this morning on roe hway mate, that exhaust looks and sound sweet! .. I was in the wingless clubspec
Yes that was me  Nice car - I'm a fan of the old school gold-on-blue :)
I wasnt particularly happy to pull between those trucks, its a pet hate of mine!!! Makes me feel like a dickhead driver lol

Makavel 06-07-2009 07:01 PM

nice ride , maybe even a set of 02 wrx rims would look the goods

V3 RA 06-07-2009 08:19 PM

come on jezza, every man and his dog does vf34....something bigger!

Jezza 15-08-2009 08:13 PM

Update - after discovering I have a unichip, I have been presented a few more options for a short term tune. I'll be visiting Tim Slacko at West Racing for some advice for tuning options. I figure if he doesnt think I should keep the Unichip, he'll probably try sell me a Motec lol.
In either case, I think I should look at taking the 'big' step of a turbo and intercooler when I get a tune...

I've bought a heap of bushings to keep my DIY urges busy...

Also have a Whiteline roll centre kit to go on with the ALK and camber bolts when I get my alignment. Have been recommended to go to Wilkenson's Suspension.

Things are starting to take shape....

Jezza 15-08-2009 08:25 PM

Has anyone on here put an aftermarket/replacement fender brace on their wrx?
I have heard they offer a mild handling increase that can be compared to that of a strut brace.

Make sure you get the right STi Gearbox. There was a debate over on rexnet as to which STi gearbox actually was stronger and which ones were just as weak. Id say, go the whole hog and get a 6 speed.

Nothing wrong with a VF34. Make good power for what you want. If it was good enough for a late JDM RA, then its good enough for any car really.

Nice car, have not seen it in the flesh but i have not been driving for a good month now.....;p

Subafury 16-08-2009 10:08 AM

looks great. lovin the black colour. good mods too. hopefully mine will have most of those mods too when im done with it

Strubaru 16-08-2009 12:42 PM

slako worked his wonders on my gt foz with a unichip approx 180awkw at 17psi with vf-22, eq length headers, it goes really good, he will do a road tune as he has no 4wd dyno ;)
Make sure you get the right STi Gearbox. There was a debate over on rexnet as to which STi gearbox actually was stronger and which ones were just as weak.
what was the verdict? hope the 4.444 dccd box got a good rap?

Elrico 16-08-2009 01:34 PM

4.444 are pretty tough in general found in the 03-05 before they went back to 3.54 final drive in 06. I think its the gc8 3.54 final drive setup that sucks mostly specially with those r160's..... Then again, spose the gearbox/driveline only sucks as much as the driver to a certain extent.

Eric the V6 STI runs 4.44's
Eric the V6 STI runs 4.44's
Wow intresting to know, so it is different between wrx and sti! Its funny that subaru jump around with the different ratios. You'd think they'd make a standard one, and a race-ready one ;)

So what would the Version 5 RA gearboxes be? 4.44's dccd?

Terry.Wrist 16-08-2009 03:53 PM

AFAIK its 4.44 close-ratio dccd.

The Foz gets 4.44 but its got the larger rolling diameter tyres which actually works out to pretty much the same revs to km/h as a gc8

Rossco 16-08-2009 04:18 PM

I believe Ra's use 4.44 final drive ratios too, but they have much shorter gear ratios in the box.

I think 5th is 1:1 in an RA where as 4th & 5th are both overdrives in the STI to reclaim some highway cruising ability......

Strubaru 16-08-2009 05:55 PM

yeah, my 4.444 dccd box is out of a 98 v4 sti R coupe :)

scoobygez 16-08-2009 06:36 PM

Early ra have short 5th, later ie my99 had longer 5th gear, mine did my head (ver 3 sti type r) in on the motorway ver 5 are great with the long 5th gear!

Jezza 17-08-2009 10:08 PM

Today, out of the blue, my wrx misfired under full load and continued to exhibit unstable idle and reluctance to go onto boost/full load.

I drove it home carefully, then took it round the block. It then threw a CEL, which I read when I got home - 2 long flashes, 3 short - which is:
Air flow sensor Abnormal voltage input entered from air flow sensor

I'm happy I was able to diagnose the problem easily, now I just got to do the ring around to find out who can sell me one cheapest :) Regents is the first on the list. If anyone has any other recommendations, do share
I was thinking about getting a 2nd hand one, but i figure a newie will be more reliable.

I guess the K&N on my CAI finally did the damage it's famous for on GC8's...
Alot of useful info on the forums regarding this issue, and a search brang up alot of useful answers, so cheers for those who have had/helped with the issue in the past.

Strubaru 18-08-2009 08:56 AM

they're $220ish from any subi dealer :) shelf the oiled pod and buy an apexi power intake dry pod :D

Rossco 18-08-2009 11:01 AM

I have a spare here for you Jeremy if you need it.

Try cleaning it with CO contact cleaner first.
