Your old system might have had a blocked cat, not the sort of thing you'd notice slowly dieing then all of a sudden it's free to breathe & re set it's computer.

bonnet open, he said that every car that comes in has it open.

But not every car that goes in has a top mounted intercooler that is fed cooling air by a duct in the bonnet. Which part of that is not obvious?
