The gearbox problems? Friends I know who have had Jeeps, all have had the gearboxs fail (4 of 'em).

I wouldn't touch a jeep with a fifty foot pole

Just all of it. While I definitely think Jeep has really stepped their game up in the last 2 (give or take) years it's still a bit of a worry. I don't mind so much with the warranties, I probably wouldn't be keeping it for more than 3 years, but I know a few jeep owners who have a lot of little niggles in the vehicle around electronics, the way it drives etc. that are really hard to replicate at the right time - being when you're at the dealership to get it fixed.

Yep electrics in jeeps I have owned jeeps in the past the basic mechanics are usually good and they are very well equipped for the money. But the Japanese have much better electrics I would take forester any day over a jeep. Basically if you don't mind your car not being perfect all the time and going back to the dealership for the odd problem you will still be happy with a jeep.
So how are you finding the new Forrester? I've started thinking about getting a crossover or small/medium SUV for the same reason's you mentioned and the Forrester seems like the best of the bunch.
Pretty good so far!
Yet to take it on an off road adventure yet, hoping to take a week off around June/July and go on a fishing trip down south.
I wasn't too keen on the CVT at first, but in all honesty it isn't that bad!
Also found that having the gear shifting levers on the steering wheel can be handy at times, especially when some one pulls out in front of you, drop down a gear or two and it takes off like a rocket :D
Either that or the Cherokee Trailhawk, but the Jeep reputation is off putting.
Had a couple of mates get a Jeep, the last thing I heard from them in regards to anything Jeep, was never again.
