Why are you going oversize pistons on a brand new short motor? I dont really see a point for a miniscule amount of displacement. Usually done when your getting the old case rebuilt.

Because a bore not specifically honed for the specific forged pistons in it will burn oil like a mother fucker not to mention running more risk of a piston picking up in the bore.

My engine had stock size aftermarket pistons on a brand new short block. Dont use bugger all oil on mine, even with the racing.

As Daz said. That and balancing is "overkill" for sure (closed deck is double overkill) but we're talking about the 2.5 blocks here. I just want to do the small things for peace of mind. Not much difference in spending money on the oil pickup and windage tray. You know, the one-percenters for that tiny margin of (hopeful) safety factor.

3 of the builders I spoke to have seen cylinders come ever so slightly out of round from the factory, albeit rare. It's only $500 to bore and hone to suit the pistons and given the total expenditure it's a small price to pay in my opinion.

Then you've been fortunate enough to have gotten away with it so far. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Ask any proper engine builder whether that's good practice or not!

It's dubious practice for standardish builds never mind high boost high revving applications that get hammered on track regularly.

When it comes time to refresh your engine I'd bet my pension that your bores aren't round.

In this instance its good practice not overkill. The balancing was as it's just not needed on these engines whereas some like V8s etc it is.

Default Update

OK, people have been asking for updates.

Short block is now assembled. I have opted not to do the flex/e85 conversion as I can do that at any stage in the future. After realizing I will be reasonably limited in maximum power with my td05-20g, I decided to do mild cams, new springs & retainers and adjustable exhaust cam gears. My builder reckons it will help with response and hopefully broaden the powerband a touch. Probably a bee's dick of difference, but now is the time to do it. Touch wood the engine doesn't have to come out again any time soon so I figured I might as well chuck them in now.

After talking that over with Doug @ STechnic, we decided the best thing to do is ship my heads over to Robin along with the goodies I have collected and get him to overhaul the heads and do the long block assembly. That way he can dial in the cams, valve lash/clearances and overall compression to his liking.

No ETA. Didn't ask. It'll take however long it takes.
