at a high level is this somehow due to the bigger displacement of the 257 or is there another engineering error that subaru made ?? curious about this

I think it's just down to the bigger displacement and the lesser surface contact area that the 2.5 gaskets have.

Spoke to a couple of builders this morning, recommended Tomeis or Cosworths if you can afford them as they are better at higher levels of boost and have improved on the subaru design. Only reason they go back to oems is to keep costs down... going tomeis or cosworths adds another 300 over the cost of the subaru gasket kit...

You're reducing the mating surfaces with the larger bore quite alot firstly. Then the combustion pressures will be higher.

Russ is right on the money, greatly affects the compression ratio on the EJ257 using the OEM gasket once mating surfaces are reduced, it's not designed to handle this kind of compression as its at OEM thickness.

Im still suprised that OEM isnt best. However if its what people recommend then go with that.

So I decided against a snail for now

Heads are out I thought I better focus on the things that can't be done once the engine is back in.
- Cosworth 277° S2grinds 11 lift / Tomei 270° Pro-cams 10.8 lift
- Tomei high performance valve springs
- ID1000s

This completes the list and is now ready to receive a drop in snail at a much later stage. For now I should be able to very easily max out my VF43 after the run in period
Rossco, Serbaru, Dan [GTI] and 2 others like this.

Guys - Thoughts on throwing kando/ultrex UEL headers into my build vs keeping the stock STi one on?
I've read the multiple threads on them here but can't see if they are effective on the 2.5s, most have them on the 02-05s 2L EJs.
