Evosubs Track day warrior

Gday guys, as promised ill be posting some pics of my track warrior GC8.
Intention is to cage it, rebuild the engine, make it handle, make it stop and be shiny.

I bought the car three weeks ago for 2 grand, has been in minor front end stack, air bags have deployed, some stuff is bent and buckled. Its got an 04 sti engine(i think) a VF35 turbo?, some bracing, some better rotors, big carbon snorter, some big wheels and a big exhaust.yay.

Due to time restraints and limited garage space this car isnt going to be a competitive monster unless my driving skills get alot better.
Im doing as much of the work myself with the limited space and equipment.
I just wanna get on the track safely and do sweet skids.

Good work, keep the pics and updates coming.

Master D 18-12-2013 08:56 PM

That's awesome. Plenty of gc builds with cages and good engines happening. Should be awesome once they all come together

RoughStilin 18-12-2013 09:00 PM

Hate to say it, but that's not an STI engine. It's an open deck 205. An 04 STI is a semi closed deck block. it should have a VF35 though, but it will say that on the compressor housing if it is the correct turbo.

Good to see you wanting to get out there an race though

Evosub 18-12-2013 09:09 PM

More stuff

So ive got the engine out and in bits, its not in too bad a shape besides some scored bearings.
My machinist wants me to stroke it to a 2.5 but it seems theres alot of screwing round to make that happen. I reckon ill just put some decent rods and pistons back in and freshen some parts up. I managed to break a cam wheel on removal as hercules himself must have tightened it.

So a phone call to Subaru cost me $500 bucks with new timing belt, timing covers(busted that as well), crank cog and trigger (as it was seized from the beginning of time so I heavy fisted it). and some other bits.

Ive actually got no idea if this engine is an 02, 04,05 sti/not. The pistons dont look forged, the deck is open, the coil pack is off centred but the numbers dont make sense, meh, ill forge it myself!!!!
The VF 35 Turbo apparently is a good thing so we'll see how that tunes up with the Power FC.

The engine pics are boring and i didnt take many.
Here are some of my roll cage. Its only trial fitting st the moment, have done some drawings for the chassis mounting brackets as the floor is too thin.
OMFG tho, i didnt realise id be cutting the dash apart to fit it. Meh.

Evosub 18-12-2013 09:13 PM

You sound like a man that knows what hes talking about, yep its open deck, the pistons looked pathetic, i was just going off the previous owner who paid for an 'STI Engine Low Kms engine' ahhaha. He got Ripped off!!! (Apparantly over 6grand worth of engine and fitting) (Insert whistle here)

RoughStilin 18-12-2013 09:23 PM

Oh dear, it's a standard 99 WRX motor looking at it. Anything STI from 01 ish onwards also has AVCS heads, which your pics don't show. Hopefully the VF35 comes through.

If you need an engine built pm me :)

Evosub 18-12-2013 09:23 PM

I hope they dont fight when i close the garage door!!

I love anything thats all wheel drive with a turbo, dont give a shit about EVO Vs WRX, they both go hard. But bloody hell Mr Subaru how many parts do you wanna break the engine down into!! LOLNSHIT

Oh shit!! Really, its definately a VF35 Turbo tho.
Am i better off just finding a 2.5litre for it or rebuild this one?

Evosub 18-12-2013 09:31 PM

Are these earlier engines any good for a forge?

If this is the earlier model engine, is it worth ditching it or plonking a 2.5 straight in?

Way cool dude, look forward to seeing the progress on this one.

I would not mind having your garage :D

RUSSGT 18-12-2013 10:07 PM

Nice one mate. Chuck an 02 sti block in it. Open deck blocks suck. 2.0l is better than 2.5.

kid 18-12-2013 11:19 PM

I love GC8s

DukeDrifter 19-12-2013 06:28 AM

I'm with Russ 207 goodness ftw

Tiigga 19-12-2013 08:26 AM

Nice work so far and a good amount off pics too, as others have mentioned keep the build going and the pics coming.
There is a wealth off info and people to ask and bounce ideas about

RoughStilin 19-12-2013 12:47 PM

[QUOTE=Evosub;781953]Oh shit!! Really, its definately a VF35 Turbo tho.

My knowledge is limited, but I would say to put that block to one side & start searching for a semi closed deck EJ207 block. Depending on how much power you want, you may need to revisit your turbo also, as the VF35 in standard guise is really only good for around 250 ish hp ATH

Evosub 19-12-2013 12:56 PM

Hmm. Cool. Well adding the numbers in my head for a decent rebuild I think I might just buy a new bottom end 207. They seem to go brand new around the 2.5grand mark, do some port work with new valves and springs on heads and look for a turbo.
I might take a pack of Tim tams down to subaru and see what they can offer...

Evosub 19-12-2013 01:22 PM

Can anyone shed some light on why a brand new ej20 sti bottom end from subaru appears to have an "open block"?

Riggs 19-12-2013 01:30 PM

ej20 is open deck, ej207 (01 onwards) is semi closed.

Evosub 19-12-2013 01:32 PM

That's what I thought too.cheers.
It might be just a pic for illustration, I'm going in now to have a look at one.

Update

So I ordered an ej207 semi closed forged bottom end. Not here yet so I got busy with other stuff. She's got an earlier model front end cause heaps cheaper. Have used a big hammer and everything fits ok after the damage in the front. I try to keep telling myself "it's only a track car"

I'm going to prep the panels for some paint soon and drop engine in....

I like shiny stuff and things that come in a box

Much excitement came today as a a big truck reversed down the drive.
My Brand spanking Forged EJ207 and a full engine gasket kit
I celebrated by not starting to build it but doing Bondo repairs on some dents!!

Ive gotta get this shell outta the garage and clean it up before ill even think about putting that engine together.

So thanks to my hectic work schedule I've haven't had a chance to do much on my subie. I've only managed to remove all the car panels and prep for paint and finished off the engine build.
I'll get to work on it a lot more in the next few months,

I ended up using higher a new high flow oil pump, head studs, full timing and water pump kit. Full gasket kit.
Stechnic helped me out with a couple of new camshaft pulleys

Plus, upload them as attachments - you should be able to do batches of like 7 at a time, just watch file sizes

Thx mate, I tried to use the batch upload under 'manage attachments' but the second pic would override the first pic, I'll try again later,

Finally found time to get a temp primer booth up in my garage. Most of the car is in primer now, engine is fully in, bought the wrong sump pan and the headers won't fit! Have wait til, the right one arrives to run the engine!
Now to do some more ding repairs, block it all down and get some colour on her!
