Boys...the only things you really need to know....

they only have to see you driving the car....
If they call on you to stop...stop, if you run inside "needing to Pee" they will arrest you.

Rightly or wrongly a yellow only needs to be "in the opinion of the inspecting officer", hence why you must present it to the pits for inspection.

You don't need an engineering permit. You need a modification permit.

Anything that is not factory supplied requires a modification permit, except those items specifically listed by DPI (or whatever they call the department) with acceptable ranges.

A police officer is not a registered mechanic, engineer or car designer. A yellow sticker is issued if the officer thinks the car does not conform so it can inspected by an expert. Headlights unclear, car doesn't conform. Aftermarket strut brace (even if it has a nice STi sticker on it), doesn't conform.

In theory, it is a good system. The only issue I have is if your car is found to be completely legal you have had to spend your money and time proving it. I'd prefer some form of compensation for that which would immediately stop any 'silly' yellow stickers being handed out.

I must say though in the last 5-10 years, I haven't personally been aware of anyone being stickered unless they deserved it.

Yes, unlucky mate but they can yellow sticker you whenever they feel like it! My brother hopped out his car at the beach and they called him back to award him a canary. The only time you can stop this happening is if you've parked in a garage with the door already down before they arrive, which then you can request they get a search warrant before you let them enter your property. But let's face it, they'll be back in 10 with the warrant and twice as pissed off as they were before. Sorry so say the cops can pretty much do what they like.

I had just turned onto my street when i noticed a cop car far behind in the distance. I could understand if i was being a dick or doing something wrong but I was actually driving really slowly as it was raining this morning and i was in my gf's S14, as i ususally drive the wrx i wasnt feeling too confident driving it in the rain. Stupid thing is, the cop stated to me that the car must not be lower than 10cm anywhere on the body or the exhaust. I then told him i would grab a tape measure out of my garage and measure it for him. To which he reply it wasnt necessary as it was easily lower then 10cm. After they left i measured it and couldnt find anything lower than 14cm. On the notice it said check ride height, and check oil leak. I spent a good 10 - 15min searching for the apparent oil leak with none in sight.
Had a mechanic mate come over after work and have a quick look over it, all he could find was a side indicator globe not working. Booked in for the pits tomorrow so will see how we go.

If any cop gives you a yellow sticker for your car when it's perfectly legal, get his badge number. The guys at the pits don't appreciate their time being wasted much given how banked up they always are. Only if you can be bothered writing letters/emails though.
