Default Gear Shift Leathers

In my magnificent quest to restore youth into my new MY99, I am going to buy a Shifter Surround as a large patch of the stock one in the car has peeled or gone white or .. something.

Was looking at a Suede leather one on eBay with Blue Stitching.

Does anybody know if there is someone local who could make me one in blue?

Also what is the process with installing it. Am I correct in assuming that you remove the knob (hehehe), take the old one off, cut the new one to match, and then glue it on to the plastic surrounds??

Cheers.

you can get a brand new genuine one for $80

you need to remove the gear knob, then you need to remove the plactic trim that surrounds the gear shifter.

to get the plastic trim out i think you need to remove 2 screws which are under the centre glove box lid, then remove the plastic piece surrounding the handbrake lever, and last of all remove the trim surrounding the shifter.

Then when that is out there are a few tiny little clips on the underside that hold the leather boot on, simply lever them out, replace boot and reinstall.

if you buy a non-genuine one it might be a different process of attaching it to the plastic trim though.

Gear shift boot is also known as a gaiter FYI, only learned this today haha :/

Been browsing ebay for most of the afternoon (productive day at work!) for bits and pieces to spruce up my ageing GC8 as some interior parts are quite worn after ten years of use. There's an ebay seller named topgaiters who has a neat range of leather and vinyl boots, found this one below for SyncSubaru - it's £18.99 or about AUD $30 shipped (click on photo for ebay link):

I'm about to buy the one below, same price as above.

Sync, isnt all the stiching in your car red? Just asking as i think the blue would look funny.... better off getting the black leather with red stitching imo

Any particular reason you want blue (besides the fact your car is dark blue)

Yeah it is red, but the only 2 things with stitching are the the boot/shifter and the momo wheel.

Thanks for finding that gaiter Wozz, I shall look into that!

I got one off ebay UK in proper leather (the original was leatherette and I wore it out). It was a bugger to fit because the leather was thicker and stiffer than the original fabric, so I ended up putting a length of 15mm bore pipe over the shifter (inside the boot) to hold it all up.

When you're removing all the little clips holding the wider part of the boot on, try not to break the plastic posts. I recommend a flat jeweller's screwdriver to gently bend open the lugs on the metal push fasteners, then bend them straight again before you refit them.

The pic of the one I bought looks rather long/tall, I have a short shifter I'm gonna have to find a way to tuck the top ~30mm or so down into itself when I fit it to my shifter. If it's thick (real) leather then it's gonna be a prick of a job!

What I might do with my old one is hack it up and re-make it as a model/template for short shifters, then find a local source of automotive leather and get a sample made up.
