amp trouble
i got this clarion 2/3/4 channel amp 400W
i have briged it to run two 6.5" s type alpine splits. (200W each) it keeps on cutting out on high volume and base and the protector light comes on the amp. its got hight pass filter and low pass filter. hight (HP) is for the front of the outputs from the amp, and low (LP) is for the rear outputs. now the LHS split is connected to the Rear bridged side and the RHS split is connected to the Front bridged side of the amp. Question is... am i using the right amp for this application.. to me it looks like it should be bridged to 3 channel using it for a rear sub (LP) and front speakers (HP)???

Common misconception with amps and splits is to try to give them more power by bridging amplifiers. While there is a lot of truth to "too much power is never enough" (my personal mantra), the problem with bridging most amplifiers is that you lose a lot of control (or damping). What this means is basically you can send the speakers more power (and make them louder) but you lose the accurate control you need for speakers and they start to sound sloppy. I'd rather relatively loud music that sounds good over really loud music thats distorted anytime.
As for the cutting out and going into protection, I'm unsure why it's doing that. If your amp is brigeable (which it is if it says 2/3/4 channel on it), then it should cruise along with your configuration, unless it is mis-wired somehow or a physical fault. Just high-pass the speakers about 80hz (make sure both sides are the same highpass frequency and gain) and you'll get good results. You won't get any bass but splits were never designed to give bass, just midbass, midrange and highs. Hope this helps. Darren

yeah cheers guys
i asked around and i figure that the resistance is not matched to my speakers and is causeing ti to over heat. ( its damn hot i tell ya ) i agree with you i prefer clarity to doof doof. although i occasionally like to hear my Shihad up loud. i have not got a sub atm so im trying to compinsate too much with the splits. cheers mark and darren - i just need to find time to build a sub box.
