Serbaru's back to almost stock 2-dr GC8 has a new owner. Warick has just retuned the Autronics SMC in it.

Serbaru's ex 2-dr STi:

Mao / Warick

Appreciate all your efforts on the car and fitting me in your packed schedule......All credit to Serbaru for maintaining it and to you guys for getting it back to basics so bloody well!

Looking forward to driving the rejuvenated machine - hopefully with the a/c problem sorted :sunny:

Thanks P.WRX for all the Dyno runs and tuning jobs.

We have had so many headaches looking at bad tunes, it has gotten to both Warick and me.

Below is a Motec M800 that was on a 2001WRX that came in. car was no driving properly with consistent cutouts. Mr Warick Barnes (our tuning guru) has been around Motec too long since his V8 supercar, Petronas days and West Racing days and as such has given the following report!

History of car: Hardware on car was sold by Evolution R in 2001 with a M800 done by West Racing in 2001. The car was sold in 2002 and we have not seen it until the current owner brought it in last week.

Pic of Trust hardware we installed in 2001:

Motec M800 Board:

Just some indications of who touched these cars, I am saying this publicly as both businesses are not around anymore:

RS232 connector fucked around with so the next tuner cannot access the ecu:

We however do not need to use the RS cable anymore as the firmware has since been updated by us using the newer Motec CAN (controlled area network) cable.

Tune in the M800:
1) Ignition trim was set at 18deg (WTF!! We are beginning to suspect internal engine damage)

2) Lack of definition in MAP table esp in vacuum (how did they think they were going to tune the car??)

A good friend of mine had a GSR back in 2002? That ran an 11.7 - easily had a low 11 in it but stock diffs = wheelspin.

Was built by a mutual friend who worked at psi, tuned by Brett. He jumps in with my mate, the get around the corner, is told to stop. Mutual friend plugs in the laptop and immediately pulls 5 degrees of timing out across the board ....

Sounds similar to this tune where it was set to 18deg advance to begin with and any timing taken out on the map will still be taken out on top of the 18deg already.

One day I'd really appreciate it if the tuning types could put together a sticky on how to tell a "poor tune" to a "good one" or direct me to a site to get some ideas.

Whilst I understand some aspects of engine tuning - some of it is simply beyond my limited knowledge.

So Mao, Rossco, TJ ;) . . . anyone?

mao 02-02-2012 09:48 PM

For the benefit of others who don't understand the essence of tuning, going back to the basics of Intake, Compression, Power and Exhaust strokes of the engine cycle is best to start understanding.

In the case of advancing ignition timing, imagine the piston moving up n down in the engine. Advancing timing will cause the combustion/power stroke to begin earlier, which in this scenario, imagine the piston not fully finishing its upwards motion, and the plug fires and burn fuel which then pushes the piston quickly downwards. This will lead to increased stress on the pistons and rings, which would then lead to detonation and damage if timing is advanced too much.

mao 02-02-2012 09:51 PM

Correction: in the case of EJs, side boxer compression stroke instead of upward compression stroke.:D

mao 02-02-2012 10:23 PM

Your suggestion is great. The scope is really big and it will need a lot of time and responsibility to do it right though.

DZENCI 06-02-2012 02:24 AM

That's my bro's car and there is a gain of another 20whp with a slight boost increase and better torque curve from a tune with the current exhaust and cosworth cai. That torque curve is shocking right now,it pulls hard up to 3500rpm and after that it's like a diesel and stays at 14psi. Will be interesting to see the gains once he bolts up the bigger turbo, headers, process west fmic, hyperflow cai and Vi-pec ecu.

mao 09-02-2012 08:16 PM

Finally got down on my ass to finish off the Flash tune on the GRB mentioned a few posts ago. Installed the process West TMIC with a PW CAI. Hit 294 hp but injectors were maxed out, so I had to let my foot off the throttle at 6492 RPM.

Will post up the info shortly. I have spent countless hrs perfecting the flashes on these new 32bit ecus and anyone who claims 300+ hps on these new rexes n STis, Lol, I rest my case.

Below is the intial power run of 222hp when the Subaru GRB STi came in stock vs the flash-tune done with PW intercooler and CAI, now running at 294.3hp. Pardon the graph as I let go the accelerator at 6492 RPM on the Dynapack when fuel injectors maxed out. I like perfection, so not even a minute chance of damage is allowed in my tunes:

Boost ran at 1.35bar max and was fairly constant. Would tune more boost together with more boost consistency once injectors are larger.

Was also a bad day for a tune, but customer had his day off, so the job had to be done safely as well. Todays tune was done uncomfortably with a workshop temp of 99.8 degF - 101deg F = 37.67degC to 38degC

mao 09-02-2012 11:33 PM

Analysis of the above:

1) The VF48 in the GRB is a capable unit.

2) Weather was too hot at 39degC

3) If injectors did not max out, better AFRs would have produced smoother Torque and Power curves, with better results.

4)I would also like to affirm the correlation of Power at the hubs vs Torque at the hubs here. Look at it carefully as this has been a proven and almost set relationship for the Subaru EJs between Power and Torque at the hubs. You can see all the info and runs I have done both in this thread and the Vi-pec thread.

Do not mis-comprehend flywheel power and flywheel torque, Always ensure you have the right relationship and comparisons. It is very misleading in some graphs where power at the hubs is plotted against flywheel torque.

5) Also take note of how Dynapack works. The vertical info bar at the right side of the power run graph in this case, shows axle power and power at 119.9. This is just a processing number for the SAE correction done automatically by Dynapack for barometric and temp adjustments.

Make sure the right side info bar is on your printout. Also ensure that both the axle power and power units show the same processing number. Otherwise there has been manipulation by the operator.

Soksta 09-02-2012 11:38 PM

Just a quick one Mao, are you sure it is a VF-46?
Thought the GRB came with a VF-48

mao 09-02-2012 11:42 PM

Correct me if I am wrong sir. Was always under the impression that it was a 46.

Edit: Thanks Soksta -- VF48 it is. I stand corrected.

Very impressed with this budget Jap-made intercooler kit.

Had another interesting job today. Datsun 1200 Coupe with Nissan CA18DET engine fully rebuilt. This vehicle is fully wired with a Motec M800 and once again, Local WA Racer/ Motec-trained Evolution R's Warick Barnes was specifically engaged to do it. Unfortunately the car was limited by the small radiator and will be back for the rest of the tune shortly after a custom triple-core PWR radiator is fabricated and installed. Will keep posted.

Also had some recent dyno experience with fake Walbro fuel pumps and will post some dyno results shortly.

mao 25-03-2012 12:50 AM

Hi P.WRX - below is the dyno comparison between a fake Walbro and a real Walbro fuel pump.

I have been through a lot of fake Walbros this past 2 weeks. I have been told that these pumps were sold between $80-$150 online. How can that be when our trade price with Walbro is around the $200 mark. There have been a lot of speculation on why some Subarus have more hp then others even after a Open Source Tune or Full ecu tune. I will say now confidently that it could be due to your fuel pump if you had purchase a Walbro fuel pump different from the genuine one I am going to show you below.

Original Walbro Packaging (fake one's come in a smaller box in white or a smaller box with printed Walbro logo) :

Was an exciting morning today. We broke the OST 300hp barrier on the late model GH today. Torque and power gains were made from 2500rpm onwards, as the characteristics of his turbo did not allow more to be had under the 2500rpm mark.

Just had Paul's MY09 WRX and the results were phenominal. AFRs held so we went for it.
Below are the results (Last part of the graph was due to rev cut):
