Yeah the kitty litter was useless cause it was concrete.
Bad accident.
Makes you wonder what they can accually do to stop it.
Shatter proof windshields?
Different Helmet/Visor material?
Don't forget an 18 year old (Surtees) was killed by debris in F2 last weekend. Something will need to change.

It was a freak accident I'm not really sure how you could make things any safer really (without going to a canopy / non-open cockpit). His helmet no doubt saved his life, it absorbed a hell of a lot of energy! It was a 800 g spring off Barachello's car that hit him... at 150 mph or whatever = ridiculous amount of energy!

Very lucky he managed to brake at all (although he had both brake and accelerator down). Imagine he just went flat out into the wall! :\ Lots of conflicting stories going around the net but he is 'stable' has a skull fracture above his eye and also at the base of the skull. In a coma with respirator at the moment while they try to reduce the swelling. He certainly wont be racing again this year. I just hope he makes a full recovery especially with his kid about to be born! Brain injuries suck really hope it all works out in the end.

That spring would have been like a bullet hitting your head.

He is one lucky driver to surrive the spring smashing his skull.

I'm sure he will pull through and be ready to race in the next round in Valencia

Are you mad dude?? Next round!!!! No way that'll happen, its a serious brain injury when theres bleeding on the brain. He'll be out for the season.

I'd even doubt that a skull could cope with the g's of f1 when its recovering from a fracture.

Looking at that picture he is lucky it didnt hit him 3cm lower in the middle of the visor... probably would have gone through and straight into his eye.

yer how fucked up, two very talented drivers lost in such similar circumstances

im sure they will bring in new regs after this, even if you hit a bird at that speed it could do serious damage.

something to do with the kitty litter not slowing down out of control cars as much as tarmac does.

You could argue that in this circumstance kitty litter might have been better, but things like these are very rare.

I dont think anything will come of this, the cockpits are already very high and well protected. Granted we have 2 similar situations in the midst of the 2 weeks, but when was the last time something like this happenend ?

I dont see what else they could do, if were talking windscreens, canopies etc, it will be the end of open wheel racing, were then venturing into LMP designs.
