I go through barely used DVD drives all the time. They just don't make em to last any more . Lucky to get 12 months out of em. Even the 'better' branded ones.

I've noticed this as well. So far, LG has been the best for me.

twice to three times the price of internal ones.

usually slimline ones can be had for around $100'ish. LG make them, Sony do also.. Samsung also have a couple on the market.. and yes USB 2.0 generally.

they plug in via usb. mine is a portable one so it is quite small and can be used on desktops and laptops. these are a little more expensive then just your desktop external drives as they are alot bigger and require power + usb connection.
