Tim,

imo you are wasting your cash upgrading to all that high end gear when you are not going to use it to the fullest. you are better of buying something that is mediocre and upgrading more regularly.

You will notice great improvements with a ssd drive and 6-8gig of ram on a x64 system with a i5. Buying a $350+ mainboard is not going to net you anymore speed, it will just be feature rich which half the features you will not use.

Yeah cool, So really the x64 Quad core system I am currently running is more than enough!!

I just need to give it a better HDD to work from ?

Does the use of two graphic cards slow it down.

x64 Quad is pretty good for a Desktop PC. Windows x64 with 6Gb of RAM for your photo editing stuff, nice quick solid state disk as mentioned above (Buy 2 and put them in a RAID-0 if you're really anal) and you should be flying.

If you have a NAS, make sure you're on Gig-E all the way through.

I really don't see what VMware and High Availability have to do with speed?

SSD will make the biggest system improvement IMO.

I put one in my old machine, suddenly all apps load instantly / boot time is reduced substantially. The computer still runs things at the same speed, but the speed of the hard drive makes it all new again and gives it a wow factor.

Nothing to do with speed - More of, that's the type of hardware/infra, or even industry standard to some extent, when you are throwing big money @ Windows to perform at it's best in a corporate environment.

Untick it all. Anything important runs as a service anyway.
