Default Intel I7 range

Well Looking to upgrade again soon. Currently have a Core 2 Quad, 4gig ddr2 , etc etc. Usuall stuff.

Now the main difference I would like to do this time when upgradeing is to do a little reasearch and maybe spend a little more if the value is there to do so.

One thing I always notice when upgrading is I never get blown away by the speed or performance of the new pc speically once all the programs and shit has been loaded on.

For you guys out there who are running an I7 Intel chip how do you find them,
They are meant to be a big jump over quad core ?

Though the other question is, There is also a big price jump between the 3 variances of the chip,

example

Intel Core i7 930 Quad Core 2.8GHz $339.00

Intel Core i7 960 Quad Core 3.2GHz $675.00

Intel Core i7 980X Six Core 3.33GHz $1,350.00

Now I cant really see my self spending $1350 on a single Cpu,

How ever is there going to be such a big difference in speed ?

Even between the 930 and 960 chip, $675 is still a lot of money for a sinlge part but I could possbile do it if I am going to gain Considerable performance .

So was hoping to get some experience form you guys what your opinions are, All well and good reading reviews but everyday use is better to guage an idea.

As a part of this upgrade I would be getting a top mother board with DDR3, USB3,
And Would go down the path of putting operating system on a Solid State Disk.

What's the point? Its not like you'll be running anything anywhere near the necessity of the upgrade.

If you're still keen on upgrading, wait for the prices to drop, or you'll be paying through the nose for performance you wont notice.

We haven't caught up in a while so I'm making the assumption that the most intensive program you'd be using would be photoshop 'or a variant of'?

Even if you were to go as far as to undertake 1080p authoring, I cant see any real need to upgrade from your existing set up.

You can give me the other parts if you don't want them

PC hardware is already outdated when it hits the stores, no point going overboard unless you're intending to re-create a life size 3D model of the earth exact to a millimetre.

Yeah it's annoying becuase no matter what upgrade i do system always seems to bog down.

I mean with this current upgrade I thought I would be sweet,

but photoshop still sometimes slows when working with large images.

I generally have to wait a min while shit loads when i first turn it on until it becomes more responsive.

One thing i always do is buy the basic cpu of a range so if there is 1 2 and 3 of quad cores i get 1, cheapest.

which makes me think if i did it properlly this time going for number 2 , would it make it better.

With all my software on I want it to turn on and load up right away, if i click photoshop i want it to open,

Just annoys the shit out of me hahaha.

But yeah the bonus of ddr3, USB3, Sata 3 And Soild state drive you would expect a good improvement I thought.

What upgrade is required to get generall use faster.

(edit ) take it back about soild state drives, damn boi they are bullshit priced, thats crazy
Will be sticking with sata for the hdd

That was enough to make me not want to bother either as I don't intend on taking my tower on the gravitron

Start with the basics first:
  • If you're using vista that's your first mistake 'as its prob using all your cpu by just clicking the start button;
  • Upgrade 'with a fresh install of Windows 7', I managed to pick up an OEM of Windows 7 Home Premium for $123 from MCG Tech 'go for the x64 version, as this way your pc will actually recognise and use the existing 4gig of RAM you have 'x32 wont';
  • Ensure that you leave a large enough buffer of space on the hard drive you're working off 'i.e aim to have around 80gig of space if the drive isn't for archive purposes or media playback only;
  • Have a look into overclocking;
  • Get rid of all those 'I'll use it one day', programs on your PC;
  • Ensure that software you have uninstalled is actually uninstalled, will post up the name of an application when it comes to mind;
  • Defrag drives at least once a month;
  • Get a hold of a good antivirus 'i.e nothing with Symantec or McAfee in the name;
  • Set up your drives in a raid array; and
  • Set Firefox as your default web browser

I use a SSD for my OS drive. Best and most noticeable increase in speed of general day to day duties.

Highly recommend it. 128Gb SSD is more than enough for your OS and programs. Use good hard drives for storage

Ok to give a full rundown on my system then,

Core 2 Quad
4 gig DDR2 Ram
Dual 1gig Graphic gards RUnning 3 monitors
149 gig IDE Operating hdd (91gig free)
1 TB HDD Backup general storage,
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
1 x IDE Burner
1 x Sata Burner

Bitdefender 2010 running
Firefox

Dont get me wrong It runs good when its up, but I still thought it could have improved with booting and when running intensive programs.

Maybe I am thinking it's worse than it is haha,
I mean from click to ready Photoshop takes about 5 secs.

Eariler I acidently clicked something and it tried opening a shit load of high res jpgs
took about 10 mins for it to come around and let me do somthing to close it all.

And like i said its mainly bootup when i first log on that i see the delay.

but i guess generally speaking it's pretty good, haha maybe I am just looking for an excuss to buy new shit.
