Default air con troubles??

hey everyone.

today when driving home from work i decided to turn me air con on coz it was freakin hot!!! but when i turned it on, it would start up then cut out then start up and cut out again??

Now is that telling me that i am out of gas? or that the switch is faulty?

i havent changed the gas in awhile, can the gas get stale??

thanks for the help

Tim

Mine kinda does a similar thing.

Air Con light stays on .. But i have the one of the vents aimed directly at my hands on the steering wheel, and i can certainly feel the temperature rise and fall in waves.

I think it's normal.

the temps on your a/c usually come down to under 6degrees when the compressor is on and when the compressor cuts out it will usually come back up to about 8-9 degrees. try putting a digital thermometer at the centre vent. switch the a/c to fan speed 2 and on re-circulate, if you can close the outside two vents.

if the temp doesnt get below 6 degrees then you probably need new gas.

You generally get a bit of seepage over a couple of years, especially if you don't use it over winter every now & then, King Auto Electrics in Bayswater have topped up heaps of mine over the years & prices are pretty good too, it sounds like it's low on gas but luckily not empty or the compressor won't cut in at all, so no huge leaks.
A lot of aircon places will insist on evacuating the complete system & replacing bit's & pieces, costs a lot more than a top up & usually not necessary, they just make more money out of you.

the reason they do that is because it is illegal to top up a/c systems!
