he ended up passing at joodulup pits.

Short of paying someone off or settling for rally rego you'll be stuffed with the dog-box. If the car originally was fitted with a synchromesh transmission (ie; just about everything made post 1960) it must have synchronised transmission to be road legal.

Edit; the car that passed at Joondalup did not have a dog-box, only straight cut synchro gears.
