Well like i say, the engine will barely be touched initially. Plus it'll be stripped and full with rock hard suspension, so there goes the refinement

If you're mainly going for suspension work without touching the engine, i'd assume the GC chassis would be better because its over 200kg's lighter? Whack in a steering rack off a the STi RA and do the basic suspension mods (coilies, sways, antilift etc) and it should hurl!
EDIT: not to mention its a HEAP cheaper than the GD chassic Blair |

GC would definitely be cheaper that a GD build.
B-reg has its pro's and cons and I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will let you know the costs. The question you need to ask yourself is as a student where will I get spare thousands of dollars to work on this car? What are the goals of the car? Knowing the goals, how stupid do I want to go with it? (Yes it is an addiction and it will destroy your bank balance ) TBH, if it is just to learn more about cars, I'd look at something a lot cheaper that will still give you an understanding of each aspect (i.e. buy an old mini or something with a bit of race heritage), strip it down and rebuild it.

It's been suggested before for the old Impresiv wagon, why not convert your wagon to STi spec and buy yourself a reliable daily shitter?
Pickles has ex-gov fleet cars going for peanuts.

Blair, if you are looking for a track car, don't just stick to rexes when deciding what platform to use.. can build orsm track cars for a lot less outside of a rex...
just something to bear in mind.. |

However if your keen on a WRX, Go to JWS and buy one of the 20 Race Rally only cars they have lying around the place right now. You will get a GC8 for under 10 - and since its rally rally only you will have no issue ripping every single bit of interior out of it etc. 1150kg GC8 mmmm yes
You require a cams license and proof of competing before being able to rego a car in this method I believe - Surely Brendan can fill us in on that end of it? Brett has a valid point though, there is more available then just the WRX. If you had say a 20k budget... I most certainly would be listing a GC8 near the top of that list. 10k with rego for a JWS spec one... 10k on mods would make it quite the weapon.

If you want to build a bombed track car that isn't a WRX, look at an EG Civic.
K20A conversion will turn it into a giant killing little beast If you want to stick with a WRX, get a GC8 STi Type RA B-Reg, and bolt on the bits you need i.e. suspension, cage, seats, etc. |

Cheap track car project?
Go honda. Seriously: - Cheap, light and nimble chassis - Cheap(ish) parts/motors - Complete interchangability between models (for example, motor from DC2 TypeR bolts into a 94 civic hatch 2 door) But if FWD doesn't appeal to you (its not half bad on a track) or you want a turbo platform then maybe not.
