Did the 04 wrx engine have any problems .

Reason for the question is im about to start rebuild a low Km engine so i can install ino a track car . looking for around 400hp atw

best options for getting this power.

Im looking at doing it right the firsts time, but not have to spend a million dollars to get the power im after . Most of the work ill do except for the machining.

is it an 04 wrx motor, or an 04 STi motor?

Also how much are you looking at spending? You won't get 400hp cheap........Also you don't need 400hp to be competitive.

It's just a wrx engine .

and as for the money yes there is a limit . but if i only have to spend it once i'm happy to spend around 10k for a rebuild .expecially if im doing most the work .

im pritty sure 10k will be enough for
Pistons,head work , cams, and probably a few more things . But the 10k is mainly just for engine work not turbo and other bolt on stuff.

10k won't get you close to 400hp starting from a stock motor, even if you do it all yourself.
Also if you want to do it right the first time start with a 207 or 257. People have spent more and not reached 300hp on that motor.

re-read first post, if it's going to be dropped into a track car then handling should already be sorted.

someone can correct me if im wrong, but
bottom end doesn't make power. it contributes to torque. but the thing that makes power is the heads (cams, flow work etc). you just need a bottom end that can handle the power, and if you dont want the turbo to be as laggy, then your going to have to increase displacement (2.2 or 2.5).

Do you really need a '300kw at the wheels' machine for a track car

My opinion would be to aim at a about 250wkw...the jump up to 300 is massive for supporting mods....especially drivetrain.....you should be able to get away with mostly STi drivetrain for 250 if driven with respect.

250wkw can be acheived planty of ways with many permutations.....you need to decide what size bottom end you want to use...2.0, 2.2, 2.35 or 2.5??? Me personally, i'd be going a 2.5....hell, i think youshould be able to achieve that power on a stock 06/07 STi engine.

not sure about that. we need to remember that the 2.5 has paper thin bores, crappy pistons and all that jazz.

All handling will be done on the car first. before the engine is up and running in the car. and hopefully will be set up and tested before the engine is finished .

So the 04 wrx engine isn't a easy engine to build for reaching a figure or round about figure im after. What's there main propblem .
