if you want less noise go the 6 speed, simple
The gears are bigger/stronger than a stock 5 speed, not sure they'd be stonger than straight cut ppg's though.. |

I vote 6 speed.
Stronger than 5 speed PPG straight cuts IMHO, Double synchros on all gears and a third synchro on 2nd gear, Front LSD, stock 6 speed shifter has a much shorter throw. Very nice box to drive around town, easy shift feel when cruising and lickety split snappy gear changes when you're really into it.

factory helical cut gears stronger than aftermarket straight cut gears you say?
Common knowledge that straight cut gear design is stronger than helical design. Whether the 6 speed gears are thicker than the ppg's may determine which is stonger also. Last edited by EVL WRX; 13-11-2008 at 10:50 AM. |

I say keep what you have if it does the job.

Helical gears are stronger as there are more teeth in mesh at one time (i.e. the load is spread over a few teeth). Differences come in manufacturing tolerances, tooth strengthening (cryo), materials used, gear thickness.

6 speed heavier than straight cuts?
Different gearing? Which would be 'faster' ?

Also, is the 6 speed box a DCCD box?
