doesn't the 6 speed require a diff swap too, different clutch....

personally, I would love a 6 speed for the simple reasons that they are quiet and I am yet to hear of one fail.

that said....

as joe has mentioned a stock box will do all of the above with 'some' mechanical sympathy.

Depends on which 6 speed and which car your have. If you have a 97-00 gc8 WRX you can put a 06+ 6 speed in without any rear diff swap as its already designed to run with a 3.54 rear diff.

Earlier 6 speeds need a 3.9 rear diff

You dont have to change your clutch setup. 5 speed clutch goes into a 6 speed no problems as long as you use the 6 speed fork

On topic though... 5 speed ratios would be better suited to drags, so that is an option to consider.

"If" you can get a 6 speed installed in your car for free, I'd be going that path myself over the PPG 5 speeds.

For what you're doing, definitely 6 speed. There have been plenty of these conversions done at places like MMS so they can tell you exactly what you will need. You can also ask them why they generally prefer the standard 6 speed for their tarmac competition cars.
The DCCD -type will require major wiring harness changes so best stick with <05...

ask why the person with the 6speed is wanting to go to a 5 speed PPG box if the 6 speed is soooo much better?

A dog box has no synchromesh engagement gears. It is literally get the revs right and put it into the next gear, very much like driving a truck except you don't 'need' the clutch. When you get it right you'll be shifting ultra quick, get the revs wrong and it'll sound like you've just got your L plates LOL.

The synchromesh allows the gear you are in and the gear you are going to (wether up or down) to more closely match rotation speeds, allowing for a gentle engagement. When you shift and you hear the well known sound of grrcckk, that's the synchro not having enough time to do its job, and little bits chunk off and soon enough it's bye bye gear teeth. If you're shifting that quick straight cuts will add life but it won't be indestructable. A dog box will handle that type of punishment for a very long time but would be a pain in the ass to drive daily. Recommend track specials only.

But to answer your question, both PPG and dog boxes will invariably make the whiney noise.

PEOW, PEOW!!!

Mmm now if only my 6 speed wasn't notchy as fuck. I think my clutch is on its way out again 4 months later. With the new clutch for 2 weeks changes were silkly smooth but now I struggle to find gears which sucks
