Default The DynaPack Hub Dyno - Article

Autospeed have relaunched an article about the Dynapack- worth a read.

http://autospeed.com/cms/A_111343/article.html

Quote:
In Australia, the Dyno Dynamics roller dyno is king. It is used more widely than any other single type, and over the last decade its measurement has become the standard against which 'wheel horsepower' is measured. However, just because it's ubiquitous, it doesn't mean that it is the only way. One of its more recent competitors is the New Zealand-sourced Dynapack hub dyno, a vehicle dynamometer that bolts the dyno heads directly to the wheel hubs, rather than using a roller against which the car's drive tyres bear.

So what's a Dynapack like? What are its advantages (and disadvantages - all products have both!) over a more conventional roller dyno? Recently ChipTorque on the Gold Coast negotiated the loan of a Dynapack four-wheel dyno for a few weeks; Dynapack was pleased to demonstrate the equipment to a potential purchaser, while Lachlan Riddel of ChipTorque is a technology junky, always keen to experience something new. ChipTorque's current dyno is a two-wheel-drive Dyno Dynamics roller.

I'm guessing ASG have the version that reads over 200hp per pack

What I take from that is that it is a good system but probably more suited to cars that might require a few hours tuning due to the work involved in setting it up rather than a quick power run or a tinny touch up.

Remember you pay for the time setting up as well as actual running time on the dyno.

I suspect you can get identical runs out of it a little more consistently than a roller dyno but once the dyno operator if familiar with the system and its variations I don't see it affecting the ability to get the tune they are capable of producing unless the dyno is a real dinosaur.

I doubt you can actually get any more information out of it than a current Mainline or equivalent roller dyno.

The guys at ASG certainly don't take 45 minutes to an hour to strap a car on

Nice link, I ended up reading about 20 other tech articles on that site as well. I especially liked one where they had an electric motor assisted turbo... very nice indeed!
