Cool Locusts killed my99

Hey! So this is how my perth to Byron bay (via wagga wagga) roadtrip has ended about 1000km ago there was a locust plauge... Engine overheated a lil, unbeknown to me (APEXI FC YOU LIE!!! TELL ME THE TRUTH DAMMIT!!! SO I KNOW TO STOP) head gasket went. Haha and now I'm running on two cylinders so I'm putting her on a trailer for the remaining 400km. Haha hopefully being toed by a foz to retain subarus dignity...
Anyways. How hard is it to replace a head gasket on a boxer engine? I have plenty of time for a diy, as I'm on holidays - but would it be better to pay someone to do it? Has anyone out there had this experience too? and know the approx costs involved? Diy vs unknown mechanic?

Ps here she is halfway across

yeah definately engine out, i have heard of people doing it in the car, but personally wouldnt do it like that
if you have all the right tools and torque specs its fairly straight forward to do...

the same... But the more I think about it, the less I blame the instuments... It doesn't neccessarily have to overheat to break things... I guess the only way to tell the headgaskets are gone would be the loss of coolant and oil, and a lower compression. Mmm wouldn't it be cool if the fc monitored compression too...

I've been reading some ancient threads on this forum, and there seems to be a general concensus that the gaskets can be replaced in the engine bay - but with more difficulty. But - since I'm on holiday and not around dads workshop; I think I'll leave the engine in.

Another question that seems to have little information about; immediAtely - what should I do? There's likely coolant in the bores isn't there? Coolant=corrosive + lovely shiny object ==> disaster. So how do I get coolan out of heads?

Haha lianas mum is pretty dirty... I think she's Austrian too - likes a lil of the hardcore scene ;-)

Good luck trying to do the gasket properly in the engine bay..

Engine out is the absolute easiest way to do it.

Gay - looks as though I'll need some workshop space... My00gc8 - have you personally replaced a head gasket?
