I hope he wins - so it sets a precedent we can all follow.

Sure, it'd be great if he won, and proved the lack of calibration or incorrect use of the lazer, but I cant help but think of all the threads on here like "OMFG I just got caught speeding, how can i get out of paying".
The response from people here is always along the lines of "Dude, you were speeding, pay the fine, and adjust the way you drive". Why do we now all of a sudden want to see a precedent set, to allow more people to get away with dangerous driving?

I don't think the issue is allowing dangerous driving Matt but more the issue that those in the know have been aware of the fallibility of all methods of speed enforcement measurement.
I wonder how many people were caught (and simply paid up) by Multinovas with two cars in the frame which has been challenged successfully on many an occasion. I wonder why the new Poliscans do not take two timed photos allowing for the speed to be confirmed by distance covered over known time. I recently had a dinner with a couple of state and federal politicians who all openly stated that they are well aware of the fact that speed cameras do not increase road safety but are simply revenue raising. I personally hope that he does win and , hopefully, the government is forced to deal with some of the greater issues of inappropriate driving such as failing to keep left, driving with a GPS in the middle of the windscreen, unroadworthy vehicles, etc. Most road reports state that approximately 30% of accidents involving serious injury or death involve excessive speed (and what does excessive speed really mean) - what is our powers that be doing about the other 70%? EDIT - I just returned from Thailand where it seems that road speed and often road rules are barely enforced. However, it seemed to me that the road system seemed to operate a lot better on poorer roads with a greater level of courtesy from it's users. I wonder why that is? Perhaps it that when left to our own devices we all take into account other vehicles and the appropriate driving style rather than some arbitrary enforcement of a given speed.

None of the speed detection devices used in Australia have been tested as required under federal law according to some correspondence between the Aussie Speeding Fines group and the guy who is responsible on a federal level.
Just a matter of time before they get tripped up on that one.

It amuses me that a police officer is contesting a charge which he enforces as part of his duties.
It pisses me off that he's on full pay and at the same time we the public are paying for the courts to deal with it. Whichever way it pans out there will not be any change to the speed enforcement system. It would not be in the "public interest". I am sure both legal camps and the courts would be mindful in avoiding any such precedent.

It not the court's position to be "mindful of the precedent". One of the fundamentals of the Westminster system is the segregation of legislature, policing and court system. If the officer's legal team is mindful of the precedent it set it would not be fulfilling it's obligations of defending him.
The prosecution however will be doing everything it can to avoid a loss.
