Default Choices: STI vs WRX

Hey all,

Early Next year I will be selling the Betty and buying a new WRX and I've been trying to work out the best plan of attack.

The main questions I have are:

1) Should I buy a normal MY12 WRX.. cheap option but will need to spend more on mods/improvements?
2) Buy the more expensive MY12 STI so I don't need to spend as much doing it up..
3) Buy either a second hand or ex display/demo with KM's on the clock to save on the initial purchase price and spend from there..?

The car will be used as a daily driver/work car... I do around 500-800km Per Week on average.

What are your thoughts??

MY12 STi will be in the area of $70k D/A and a WRX $45k D/A, so you're basically spending an extra say $30k over the WRX just so you dont have to spend anymore money doing it up.

Just buy a low kms or demo MY11 STi for around mid/high $50k when the time comes, thats IMO anyway.

Buy the Sti.

As soon as start upgrading bits, there's always people looking to buy Sti bits for their WRX's.
A little extra exclusivity.
Higher resale value.
Buying 2nd hand/ex-demo, could be a good option. (Depending on how long you want to keep it, or at what "km level" you are looking to offload it).

That said, if I was was about to drop... say 60k into a small japanese, awd, turbocharged car... I would be walking straight into an Mitsu dealer, and picking up a X. (Not MR).

Fred Astaires Evo X made just about same power torque as me, on a LOTTTTT less coin. (4 mods in fact... lol).

Brent.

It depends on how much you plan on modding it.

With the 2.5l there is no major benefits engine wise between the two. The main benefits are the 6 speed, suspension and brakes, bigger turbo and better interooler + a few cosmetic benefits.

If you are going to go heavy on the mods, suspension will be changed anyway?

Turbo will be upgraded either way?

Brakes, while brembos are awesome, unless you are on the track the wrx ones will be more than adequate. Brembos are stil highly desirable.

This leaves the 6 speed and the top mount as the main benefit. I'd weigh up how much you think these are worth and go from there.

If you are not going to go nuts on the mods however, STi all the way! 3 -4 k on an exhaust, tune + a few other bits and pieces and you have a weapon that will decimate almost anything on the street.

Why no MR love Brent? If it is because of my tuning 'issues', that's 99% because I'm a fussy bugger. Plenty of big hp atw SST boxes going around now.

Wrt to the OP, I'd look at what driving you are doing and what you expect from the car. STi is great, but a harder ride and a lot more of an initial investment etc. Then if you want to mod and tune, may as well take the savings of a second hand/demo unless you particularly want new. Myself I prefer new as I am the only one to molest it.

Thanks guys.. great advise!

I wouldn’t go too crazy on the Mod’s... tbh exhaust, tune, suspension and a few cosmetics.

My cut off point for KM’s will be around 90,000

My car now has done almost 70,000 so from my calculations it will reach the 90K Mark around Feb Next year.

Ever thought about dropping some Years, and getting a MINT condition, extremely low KM's STI for alot cheaper, then bombing the F#%K out of it with that huge mountain of cash you saved. Alternativly, Money bath. Om nom nom. Nothing gets women out of clothes faster then a bathtub full of cash =P
