Default 2001 wrx potential purchase, question about instrument cluster

Im considering buying an 01 Bug eye, looks a good car but has a problem with the dials....... the speedo is 30k an hour over what it should be at all times, so if your doing 60 it says 90kmph...?
Any ideas what could be causing this, it is consistent apparently, and considered to be an electrical fault? also the rev counter is out as well.

below is a pic of the dials, is this the correct cluster for an Aussie car?

Just as a quick guess. Does it have a short ratio gearbox? i.e. from an RA-R.

You will know beause it will be revving its tits out just trying to cruise on a highway at 100km/h. ~3500 - 4000 rpm ish

edit - looked at the pic, definitly a fault with the speedo.

To me it looks like a zero error, not a span error, not sure how hard it would be to fix, you would need to remove the speedo dial, remove the pointer, (if thats possible) and put it back on (at zero)

that photo is with the key turned and but the engine off.
With the key turned off the pointer will go back to zero

The above would have to be done, (putting the needle back on at zero) when the car was switched on, and not off.

You'll need to consult the factory wiring schematics.....

Thread steal :P

I have a sort of similar issue with MY01 Bug, the previous owner was an electrical engineer, so I am led to believe and decided to replace the KM display and indicator bulbs in blue, not the problem, the problem however is that when I go over 100km/h the speedo "ticks" so to speak, it doesn't go up smoothly, instead ticks and jumps from 100km/h to 120 then 130....ect...any ideas? thinking that the previous owner had damaged some wiring when replacing the bulbs ....?

Cheers

Brett
