TomTom To Sell GPS Data To Road Authorities, Private Companies

Quote:
TomTom Australia says it is planning to sell GPS data collected about its customers' journeys to road authorities and private companies even after it was forced to apologise when that same data was used by Dutch authorities to set speed traps.
a bit gay.

but glad most people who live using tomtoms dont take the back roads!

How do they collect the data? As far as I knew the GPS didn't transmit anything, was only a receiver......?

I'd be thinking on updates Doug - that's when Apple iPhone exchanges it's info with home.

Yeah it will be the same as the iphone/androids/every gps thingy out there. It keeps a tab of the satellite locations at certain times (i.e. when you power off) so it can find them quicker. The idea being that people hate waiting for a device to find GPS sat's.

Selling off this data is just utter shite though. Slap a big sticker on each device saying your data will be sold off to government/highest bidder and watch the sales of old skool UBD's go through the roof.

No problem for me. I use a GPS but it never gets plugged into anything except a cigarette lighter, it would have to be pretty f'king clever to give anyone any info from there!

PS, anyone who's seen my Motorola brick knows I care not for new technology.
