Ludwig - What are you thoughts on the 2010 STI gearbox?

Pretty much the same as 2008 onwards. There haven't been any changes in the design since then.

Just make sure you dont get a Gen 5 Legacy/Liberty STI 6 speed. They are essentially a 5 speed box with an extra cog. Uses cable shifting too instead direct linkages.

Ludwig, can you recommend which year 6 speed i should look for taking the following into account:

Front diff, male or female ends on gearbox side of drive shafts (What will MY01 front driveshafts plug into?) Not sure here

Diff Ratio: Pretty sure a MY01 has a 3.54 rear, Eg, 06 STI 6 speed will suit this.

At the moment, i'm thinking an 06 sti box is the go .. this should be the easiest to "plug and play" ?

02 and earlier box will plug and play with your stock front shafts. Anything later will need auto trans stub axles installed to pnp with your front shafts. (cheap and easy).

I recommend 6MT shafts, you'll snap your 5 speed ones like a twig with enough launches.

Ps get a Group N trans mount, the 6MT weighs a fair bit and the stock mount has a habit of getting a little soft and allowing too much trans movement on throttle on/off transitions.

Trick is to try and find one Rich without getting royally fisted on price. DIY is possible though

Yeah 2006-2007 Box would be easiest regarding install. You wont have to hunt down a 3.9 rear diff, but you will have to get auto stubs to re-use your current front shafts. But then its going to cost more to buy.

You really should run a plated rear diff with a DCCD box too. which will further add to the cost.

3.9 R160 diffs are a pain to get your hands on. But if you are maybe planning to run R180 rear end, 3.9 R180 diffs are easy to get your hands on.
However if you ARE planning to run R180, 3.54 R180 is a pain to get your hands on, but 3.54 R160 is easy. LOL WTF!!!!

There is a 2006 AUD spec DCCD 6 speed box for sale on rexnet at the moment WITH the plated R180 diff for $5500. Not a bargain, but still a reasonable price.

You could buy that and for now run your standard rear diff until you get your hands on R180 shafts and hubs to complete the conversion.

Thanks for the info, thinking long term, it would be better to go for the newer, 06 box rather than spending the coin on a 02 STI 6 speed.

Unless 02 STI 6 speeds were $2500, which i think is a fair price for that age of a box these days, i would buy it. Otherwise, $3500 - $4500 for an 06 box would be the go to get the most out of it, and buy the shafts to suit.
