Not related to a cruise control system is it?
If cruise was engaged and the clutch disengaged the VSS would be telling the ECU to increase RPM till it hits the limiter.

Probably builds boost purely from how much its revving but I mean actually trying to drive with it on just looks like it would strain the engine a lot and

In regards to the cruise control thing in not sure, I didn't even have it turned on

using the Perth-WRX mobile app

That's usually the case if the switch on the clutch is still active.
Makeshift switch...anything is possible.

Worth tracing the wires to see what you are dealing with.

In terms of antilag, any important or recommended pre-requisites, other than a capable ECU?

Obviously catless everything pre-turbo, rest of the exhaust, who cares type situation?

Anything else?

Not just turbo and headers potential dropped valve if you stay on the bang bang button way too long.
