the supposed motec is whoreshipped coz of its ability to prevent ping. how many engines have been blown on a motec of recent times? more than unichip i can tell u that. bring on the Pectel with antilag enabled

Unichip is fine for me and my mods what is the point of spending a lot more to essentialy do the same thing this is going to do for me. as long as its tuned saftly and correctly there shouldnt be a drama.
i mean shit its got to be better than running stock ecu . |

tuners never do really push piggy back ecus. full replacement ecus on the other hand (ie motec) thats another story. and did i say "get a motec"?

Motec, Pectel and other high end ECU's are priced and feature packed for a reason. At the end of the day you want something that has the processing power and resolution to account for sudden changes in throttle requirements and air fuel calculations. Real-Time tuning is also going to save you heaps in the long run as you can see a live trace of the RPM, LOAD Point and trimmings and make changes as they happen. I think, playing with piggyback systems is a bit dodge. Why fool the ECU! The Subaru stock ECU is miles ahead of the Unichip in every which way possible, with a bit of learning and the right tools its most likely the better way to go for simple bolt on stuff. The engineers with Denso's help spent a lot of time refining it; why not learn from their hard work. Even simple changes to knock correction and wastegate duty cycles would yield the same result.. If not better then the unichip. Having said that, it’s a lot of info to take in. Sadly it’s also a lot of vested time in learning the logic and bits required to understand the HC16 processor held within the stock ECU. Tuners stick to what they know and thus many of them recommend you something within their comfort zone. I’m sure Tim knows his stuff with Unichip, so you can be rest assured that to a point he will do the right thing and tune the engine to what he sees as being safe. As a few members have said on here previously over the years, the aim is not to build a hand grenade. Tuners usually find the point of ping and then back it off a few touches and then richen up the AFRs a tad to ensure safety. Not only are they helping you gain the maximum amount of performance but ultimately they are also risking their name and reputation. Technical stuff aside, its ultimately the "tuner" that will make or break the engine. |
