newbi to the subi
hi guys im brand new to subarus and while i dont have a wrx i did pick up a 1996 impreza with an ej16 engine which i believe is good for something like 90hp
i joined here to find some info on avalibility of engine swaps as im really enjoying the car and just want a slight power increase as its a daily and i have a bike for speed. can someone tell me am i wasting my time trying to get a stock 2lt or there abouts turbo engine put in this thing or would it be cheaper to find a cheap car that is already running this setup. cheers shane |

always cheaper to sell and buy a car with the drivetrain you want
GC8 (your shape) WRX's are pretty cheap these days

my local wrecker has a bunch of subis with different engines. ej16 ej20 ej22 and ej25
there is a liberty there that has the 2.5lt engine and it also has some rims and interior bits that might be nice. he only wants $300 for the whole car just have to confirm the engine does run. this is my car btw. and a quick photoshop i did to see what it would look like |

Subi's are piss easy to work on, apart from wiring anything from a Liberty will fit an Impreza if you could find a cheap fucked WRX it's easy enough to swap everything over, really depends on how much you like the car you have now and how much time you want to spend, Pickles Auctions are best for bargains but you've gotta get it to Gerro, I've done it a few times and minimal tools are required, I think if you found a 2L you'd be disappointed after a few weeks and a 2.5 "might" be a wiring problem, personally I'd stick with what you have or get a different car, like they said above, pretty cheap these days.
This is the type of wreck you'd want to buy. 01/95, Subaru, Impreza, Wagon - Pickles Auctions Australia

Welcome mate. Love your ambition but it's a long process doing a proper RX to WRX swap. Not to say it can't be done but you would save a lot of time and money (especially in the long term) by just buying a WRX.
Keep this car as a good daily thrasher and save your pennies for a WRX or even a nice GC8 STI and get all the goodies that Subaru offer.

yeah not looking for alot of power increase just want to make it abit nicer to drive on the open road. atm it sits on about 3k while going 100kph, and with its current exhaust is quite loud. might just focus on making it more low key.

That is about std revs for a STI with 4.44 gearing, a set of 17"rims will change that but you probably won't have the grunt to overtake in a hurry and you'll need a sat/nav to see what your speed is.
Also remember if you go 2L you'll need to swap the computer over but that's only a 15min job.
