Exhaust Sound
Hi again guys,
Just wondering if anyone could help me with their opinion, So I have a GC8 WRX and what I've done is put the X-Force Turbo Back Exhaust along with other small mods like GD STI intercooler conversion, Boost Tee Controller. It was all working great and I had the silencer on initially and then my mechanic opened half (The butterfly pattern silencer, not sure if this makes sense) and after it was opened half, the sound was slightly louder and it spools just a tad bit quicker. So my mechanic said if I get rid of it all together I would then again notice more improvement in spool time so we did. In the process of removing it completely, my mechanic said once this is out it can't go back in because he tried with a plier and it doesn't move, so he cut the silencer and bend it so that it would come out. Now that it's out I really like how the car just keeps wanting to go, like it spools quicker again. Although this might just be my imagination and I've read some people say that silencer doesn't actually do any restriction and it might have been my mind playing tricks but I could've sworn it does feel different. But anyway, I think the sound is a bit too loud now, one neighbour was complaining and I felt pretty bad. I do want to enjoy my car but I don't wanna be a prick in the neighbourhood if you know what I mean. What I wanted to know form everyone's opinion is: 1. What can I do to reduce the drone or sound without restricting it with the silencer? 2. If nothing can be done, since the old silencer has been destroyed, is this something that can be purchased again separately? 3. I've read a lot of people saying that once we install the equal length header then the Subaru drone / rumble is gone and it will be a lot quieter and in fact have better flow than unequal length header, is this true? 4. If option 3 above is a good path to go, I've seen around and Empire Performance seems to be the most cost effective one, have any of you guys have experience with this product? I desperately need some advice guys, since the silencer was removed, I was actually afraid in starting the car at night past 8:30 or 9pm if I have to go out as I don't wanna be a nuisance to the neighbours. At the end of the day although the Subaru rumble is nice and I like it but taken into account for the consideration of others I would prefer not to have it but at the same time I don't want it to restrict the spool and flow. Any idea guys? Thanks again so much and look forward to hear from you guys |

I'm new to the WRX so take my advice lightly but I drove one MY00 STi WRX with a silencer in it and it absolutely ruined the car, worse than stock. My MY99 WRX was much faster. Some silencers are more restrictive than others. They do however make a big difference.
If it's too loud you could change out the muffler, cannons are the worst if you have one. You could also check the resonator to reduce drone, but won't affect overall noise I don't imagine. equal length headers won't affect drone or sound level, you'll just loose the Subi rumble. I get up at 2:30am, one neighbour used to complain about my stock exhaust. They moved before I put in my Hitech :P Just leave the area quick so your neighbours can get back to sleep :P |

Thanks again Patch, that's very useful info
I'll look into that definitely.... So is a resonator different than a silencers? Sorry it might be a stupid question Thanks ZiN.... Now I feel less bad Yeah I know what you mean, a lot of people say it shouldn't be that restrictive but somehow I feel the difference. The funny thing is my next door neighbor is an old guy and he didn't complain, the guy that complaint was the guy across the road yet he's somewhat a bikie and used to get his mates in Harley come every now and then but you don't see me complaining I do have a Canon muffler, is it possible just to exchange the tip only? And would this make it less restrictive? Any idea on approx cost? Thanks again guys, very much appreciated. |

Sorry about all that weird sign guys, I was typing on my iPad and it's supposed to be some emoticon but somehow comes up as question marks

Ask the fuckwit neighbour if he wishes to shove silencers in the tail pipes of his bike and that of his mates. Tell him to stop being a hypocrite.

I haven't run a varex muffler on any of my WRXs yet but i've had 3 on other cars. I've found them fantastic for keeping the car nice and quiet around the suburbs / cops and letting the exhaust breath when i need more power.

And put on a Varex. Best of both worlds.
If you're NOR then I am happy to meet up and let you see/listen to it in the open and closed positions.

Thanks again guys
@ TROLLEY yeah I know what you mean bro... He's somewhat unemployed and I Think hasn't got anything better to do than complain.... Apparently it wasn't only me, few while ago he was complaining about another neighbor who has his dog walking pass his front lawn when he took her for a walk. @okibi and Fobz... I was looking at the Varex but they are out of my budget unfortunately, but thanks so much for the offer... Just out of curiosity though is it possible to just change the tip to the Varex? Any idea on cost? @ Patch, thanks again bud... Very helpful as always, so in terms of restrictive, would a resonator be better than a silencer or they're pretty much a much? |
