If you're accelerating along the on-ramp and the merging lane gives you a couple of hundred metres of dotted line then yeh, this rule should not be a problem at all!

However, it is the situation where cars have to accelerate from a standing start that is going to cause the problems. You are going to get people rear-ended towards the end of the merging lane when they have to come to a complete stop and the person behind them isn't aware of the new rule, and you're going to have the slow retards who pull out on people get their arses caved in.

Think some of you are missing the point of this new rule.

Old rule, the comments are correct, be courteous let people in, new rule for these on ramps, if your joining, there can't be any overlap, forget the b pillar, any overlap at all you can join the freeway, no matter if your both doing 100, 80, or 1 kph.

So it doesn't matter if you can accelerate at the speed of a NASA rocket, if there isn't a space big enough for your car to fit in (at these on ramps) you can't merge at all, you don't have right of way, and would be at fault if there was an accident, even if your rear bumper touched their front bumper (when your entering the freeway)

Look at the photo in the first post, the car entering the freeway doesn't have right of way, and therefore is in the wrong in an accident. No "they should have let me in, I was in front"

Its a stupid rule, and really happy I only go to Perth occasionally.

Stupid on ramp I get to use it every time I am home it's like priority rules in the bloody pit, where dump trucks have right of way except when intersection is controlled by stop sign.
