Hey,

What they did was reset the idle.

Turn off all accessories (a/c, radio etc)
Let car idle till fans come on
Wait for them to go off
Wait 10 secs
Turn car off
Wait 10 secs
Turn car on
Repeat 10 times...

Off memory works from MY99 and up.

Ben

Seriously i don't think this works.

To reset the ecu on a new age car, you need to plug into it and send it the right commands for a reset of learnt ignition etc. ECU's are like any other electronic device, they run both RAM and ROM and without disconnecting the power cables to it.. it will just sit in low power mode and just resume itself from its reset vector and carry on with its values since no disruption to power has taken place to wipe RAM.

Ben, If you are a indeed a Subaru mechanic, im sure you well know about the Subaru Select Monitor.

That should be used to reset MY98 -> Current. (ODBII Machines)

If its a MY93 - MY97, You use the old atari style Select Monitor (ODBI Machines)

With SSMIII coming out soon, this will change for newer cars.

If you want a simple reset of an ECU just take the car back to Subaru and have them reset it proper or take it to a workshop who know what they are doing to have this done.

Yes to reset ecu you need the select monitor. But you are not reseting anything here. Due the the cars having a semi learning ecu what you are doing here is letting it relearn to idle. Basically by turning it on and letting it get to temp is logged as a driving cycle. The more you do the better it will become.

Just so you know SMIII is out already.

With reguard to car running not as good. They may of reset your ecu. What that would of done is bring all fuel and ignition maps back to initial settings. Over a few drive cycles it should get better.
