It all really depends on your application. If you still want a nice fat midrange and wide torque band on a EJ207 then definately keep the AVCS.
However if your going to a 2.5 EJ257, then yeah bigger Cams would be a serious consideration with no AVCS and less stuffing around.

Sorry guys couple more for ya's.
I was also told that I will have to alter my cooler piping (cold side) as the GD manifold 'sits in' further by the TB than the GC8. This true? So, in the end, my autronic smc won't run the heads and there's nothing I can do but change the ecu? Thanks for all your help guys, again.

No, you can use those heads with that ECU, you just won't be able to use AVCS. You may have to add a cam sensor to the front of the passenger side head depending on where the heads came from (i.e JDM/ADM) If you want to use AVCS then you will have to change your ECU yes.
Not sure on the cooler piping, though there is usually a flexible connection between the TB inlet and the piping, so this might be able to be changed to suit. Either way, it shouldn't be a massive modification if your using a front mount. If it's a top mount your using just use a GD STi top mount and you should have no issues. Better yet, if its an STi one, why not just sell me your GD manifold? I'm not sure how your SMC will go with the GD manifold, though you shouldn't have any issues as I think the MY98 used a solenoid idle control anyway.

So.
Option 1. Keep your SMC, 98 Inlet Manifold + Throttle body and 98 Heads and just get bigger Cams put into your existing heads with some porting work done. Option 2. Keep SMC, 2.5lt Heads, don't run AVCS but leave oil lines hooked up and get a 99/00 Inlet manifold and put your 98 Throttle body on to that if it fits ????? Otherwise GD Inlet manifold + throttle body (if SMC can control it) Option 3. 2.5lt Heads, Brand New ECU to run AVCS. GD WRX/STi inlet manifold + wiring J
