Before you get too carried away with strange engine knocks check your engine mounts, if they are the round ones from the GT/GTB, & they have split it will sound exactly the same as a big end knock, get under there with a jack & have a looksee before you make the same mistake as 2 others I know it's happened to.

EJ20H 92/93-96/97 TT engine ?

Engine mounts don`t make a rythmic knock/rattle like that, sounds like big end bearing death, det issues possibly, ping is powha !?

If you strip it down you may be able to pick marks in the bearings(remaining ones) as a det issue.

I highly doubt its pinged, it was run within the parameters it was tuned for. But its certainly a possibility.

And yes, 97 TT motor.

Both RMS & Tenagh diagnosed shagged motors with big end problems, when they were taken out half the engine mounts were left behind, both cars had the fluid filled round ones fitted & that's all that was wrong with them, ask 97RA & Sam if you don't believe me.
Once the fluid leaks out it's two flat metal plates banging together, one of 97RA's was broken & both of Sam's were snapped after a weekend at Collie.

Was it retuned when the motor was refitted? No two motors and tunes should be the same imho.

^^ What he said.

End of the day it's a second hand 1997 motor. Who knows what life it's had. Compression test only tells part of the story.
