Try to find a GTB Liberty or a STI 4.44 box (same) even though they are a 4 bolt they fit straight in & are a fair bit stronger, usually get one with a diff for around the 2g mark & the RA ones are a pain in the arse, especially living in the country,.
My ex blew 3rd without even trying in my old MY00 & I ended up driving it about 30k's & it did no further harm but I was lucky, I replaced it with a 98 4 bolt without any probs.

I have a 'box ready to go, same as the one in your car except good.
http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/sale/17440-99-wrx-gearbox-f-s.html Cheapest option to get you back on the road quickly. Aussie WRX gearboxes are unique, and are hard to find at wreckers and almost non existent in Importers. Or I can set you up with a 6 speed if you prefer that. (need deep pockets though) |

Cheap 2nd hand 5 spd 4.444 WRX 02+ gearbox + rear R160 diff if you can find one or as said previously get the GTB Liberty 4.444 box if you do a lot of highway driving.
WRX 02+ 4.444 is nearly as strong as the old 5spd RA boxes. Around 3400 RPM at 100 k/mph in 5th with an RA box. $2k is a damn good price for an RA DCCD box. J
