I actually preferred getting a bit more lag. With the TD04, the car always wanted to get up and go, which gets annoying sometimes.

Now with a bit more lag, you can drive the car much easier out of boost, and know you have that power further up if you want it. At the same time though, a tune will bring it down 500rpm.

My TD04 came on at under 3000 with a tune, they are great little turbo's, but i prefer something a little bigger. Not just for more power, but i find them nicer to drive.

i didnt 'hammer' it straight up. i used several runs and carefully built up to full throttle.

the car was always running richer than 12:1 and there were no instances of knock.

i know the car is going to be more laggy than a TD04, but 4000rpm seems a bit too laggy to me.
and i know timing and fueling will be different for the new turbo, but it doesnt explain the lag.

if the new turbo pushes more air for the same boost (i disagree with this, but anyway)
more air into the engine, means more exhaust to spool the turbo faster..

Waxdass - isnt the wastegate completely closed at idle and spool up, then it only opens just before it reaches full boost?

cheers, Steven

haha, you might be right about 4000rpm not being laggy...
and yes, i have only driven my wrx and a r32 skyline..

ill have a look at the wastegate settings, and see what i can do to reduce the lag.

thanks for the comments guys. keep em coming.

cheers, Steve

Dude, you can tune out a lot of lag, dont ask me how, but you can

Get it tuned, get the full potential from your setup and screw the lag, the top end results are easily worth the loss of lower end power, get used to it

why will the wastegate tension affect when it come on boost?
shouldnt the wastegate be completely closed when the car is idling and before it comes on boost?

i had the same problem with my 34 when i had a link ecu. when i changed to a autronic ecu never had that problem, i hit full boost at 3500-3600 rpm
