VF34 - laggy as Fcuk!
hey guys/gals,
I have just finished installing a VF34 into my 1999 GC8 wrx, taken it for a spin and she only gets to full boost by 4000rpm. it starts spooling (110kpa ish) by 3200rpm. is this normal? is there anything in the tune that would make it spool so late? im not too happy with the turbo as im used to the stock TD04L.. if i were to choose a smaller turbo, but slightly bigger than stock, what would you suggest? Cheers, Steven. |

Anything will feel laggy compared to a TD04. But where the TD04 runs out of puff around 5k, a bigger turbo will keep on going.
Also, if you want the maximum performance out of it you need to get it tuned. The current tune won't be efficient by just adding a hairdryer

Your just not using your gears properly and driving it hard enough, keep the revs higher!
the advantage of a larger turbo is that you don't have to drive it on boost all the time, unlike the td04, so you can drive the car in a much smoother manner under 4000rpm. also your plumbing before and after the turbo will affect spool - get a good air intake + piping + top mount inter cooler +y pipe and large bell mouth dump pipe and your spool up is a lot faster than a front mount setup, standard y pipe... etc. I managed to get full power at 4200 from a vf22 which is slightly bigger than the vf34. Once you get used to the different driving style the wrx becomes a much better car imo. Last edited by werticusness; 02-08-2008 at 11:55 AM. |

i have just slapped it on with the previous tune,
the car has a link ecu and i have data logged a few runs up and down the street. i have a wideband also, so i know its running quite rich. why will the wastegate tension affect when it come on boost? shouldnt the wastegate be completely closed when the car is idling and before it comes on boost? |

i have a 3 inch exhaust with large dump pipe, silicone intake with K&N filter, but only the stock TMIC at the moment(hopefully a STI version soon.)
the headers are stock. i have wound down the boost to 15PSI just to be safe for the moment. how does the tune affect how the turbo spools up? the turbo is dependant on the air coming out of the engine, which is only affected by rpm..?? thanks, steven. |

why would u slap on a bigger turbo without a tune and hammer it... thats just not a good idea imo... apart from pushing more air at the same boost, timing and fuelling would be different..

4000rpm = lag?
Seriously.. go drive another turbo car Tune it- get maybe another 500rpm less.. and bat it vf34 = not laggy 4000rpm = not that laggy
