What ya been smokin black my03? Everyone knows that 3 inch is optimum for a wrx.... if the wagon has any mods at all then 2.5 wont be enough at the very top of the rev range.

Also in quite a few muffler tests a bit of 4 inch or larger pipe often works well at cutting noise in addition to the existing mufflers etc. Thats how they passed this falcon on autospeed...tried several diff exahust combos before inserting some 4 inch bit of pipe

Stace had a muffler tip smaller than 3" and it was stifling his power output. I think a minimum 3" exhaust diameter at any part of the exhaust is important.

If you had a split muffler with two 2.5 inch tips then yes, it would reduce sound wihthout sacrificing power assuming that it was well made where it splits up.
Just fit a resonated 3 inch tip and a long hot dog muffler somewhere else in addition to the other muffler. My car is quiet as when idling with the 2 mufflers and reso tip i have.
